Hey guys (and gals)... I've been doing a lot of experimenting and listening over the last day or so with my SUBs, and spending time with some recordings of other 'Ray players to get an idea of how different folks treat the 'Ray sound in different settings. I was listening to the Live Aid DVD and heard both Pino Palladino w/ Paul Young and also Sade's bassist, whose name I do not know. To my ears it sounded as if the tone was rolled off a bit in the midrange area, and compressed pretty heavily. It definitely didn't sound as growly as my bass does in a normal setting. I usually play with my amp flat and simply use the onboard EQ (2-band). Rarely do I ever cut back the mids. My feeling is that the natural tone curve of the 'Ray/SUB makes it ideal for cutting through in any situation. I guess my question is how you guys typically sculpt the sound for different situations, and also what your experience is with the way soundmen mix a StingRay for the house. I'm going to get the guitarist I work with to give me a bass-heavy mix of our rehearsal tomorrow night to see how mine sounds in the context of one particular group/setting as well, in the spirit of this experimentation.
