But I have to ask anyway.

I have personal experience with only 3 MM basses. Sterling, SR5 & pre EB Sabre. The Sterling & SR5 sound very similar. I think the SR5 is a bit beefier and the Sterling a little clearer, but I've heard recordings of me playing both and I can barely tell the difference. The Sabre is different. In the same family, especially with the bridge PU soloed, but noticably different. It's not as clean & clear. Higher highs, mushier lows, no mids.

So do I know what a Stingray is? Does an SR4 sound pretty much like a Sterling/SR5 or more like the Sabre?

Does an pre EB Sabre (with just the bridge PU) sound pretty much like a pre EB Stingray?

Is there a big difference tone wise between pre & post EB Stingrays?

I have the feeling that my Sabre does sound more like a pre EB Stingray. If so, I think I like the post EB sound better.

I still wish they had an active/passive switch though.

The Sterling & the SR5 share very similar electronics (same electronics?). Someone recently posted that the Sterling could be considered a 4-string SR5.

As I understand, the Sterling or SR5 switch in the bridge position provides the closest tone to an SR4.

The Sabre is a completely different animal.

I'm sure they'll be some more "expert" advice posted soon! :)

The Sterling and SR5 have ceramic pickups whereas the SR4 has alnico. Alnico is supposed to have a warmer tone.

The Sabre, with bridge pickup soloed, is probably closer to the SR4.

Sterling and Stingray5 have the same electronics. The only sound variance would be bc of different strings, setup, EQ.
