Another issue I am trying to sort out on my '99 Axis. When I pick individual notes I often hear this high pitched ping kind of sound. Almost like an ice pick hitting metal. It is most prominent on the 5th string from the 2nd fret up to about the 8th or 9th fret, but I sometimes hear it on other strings as well.
Right now the action is super high...too high in fact, which is why I am going to have my tech put shims in it (I posted about this separately today). The relief in the neck looks good to me as well and playing the guitar unplugged there is really next to no fret buzz.
I have other guitars with much lower action that have a bit of buzz unplugged that is not detectable at all when playing through my amp and they do not produce that same noise.
That said it seems like it must be a product of the string hitting the next fret up right at the initial attack. I am just not sure why it is so audible with this guitar.
I have also dampened the springs thinking maybe that was it, but it hasn't changed. Maybe with the shim work and complete setup it will be resolved but I am wondering if anyone has ever experienced this.
