String action on John Petrucci model

Does anyone on the forum know what the factory specs are for the string action on the Petrucci model? Do they measure at the 12th fret? I bought one last week with piezo option, but the action seems a little high compared to other ones I've played. Also, does anyone know how close the pickups should be to the strings? Thanks for your help!

string action for JPM

Here is my setup for my JPM: neck relief is .010", low E from bottom of the string to the top of the 12th fret is 5/64th and high E is 3/64th. I have EB rps 10's on mine and there is no fret buzz anywhere with this setup! Also, make sure the tremolo base is parallel with the body when tuned to pitch.

Q: What is the string height off the neck supposed to be?

A: The approximate factory settings are 1/16" or 1.5875mm from the bottom of the string to the top of the 12th fret.

Also! There are a few different things you can do with p/u height. Mainly, you want your pickups close enough to the string to give a really good signal level, but you don't want the string hitting them when you strum. When you adjust them, you should also pay attention to the volume your getting as you switch between p/us making sure the signal level matches for the neck pickup and the bridge. Be sure not to try and get so much signal, that it sounds distorted when playing clean, and also that when you PM at the bridge, your strings don't knock into the p/u. P/U height is a preference that is more important than I think alot of people realize. You should take care when adjusting them so that you don't overdrive your signal, or cut it off. Either way, you'll find that you can change your playing style and sound as you adjust your p/us.

Some players (Steve Vai) play with the height of the p/u as it relates to pulling back on the bridge. Getting it to "Fret out" on the p/u. ie. when you set in intonation and setup of a jem7vwh, you should be able to pull the arm back far enough that it should increase the note to a 7th. Any higher will fret the note out causing it to octave out on bridge p/u. Just a little trick he likes to use.
