Hello all

For my dissertation I'm looking to determine whether a company that recycles guitar strings will be an economically viable business venture. I need a little bit of help to gather enough respondents to my questionnaire!

If any of you can take a bit of time to do it I would be eternally grateful! Will literally only take 2 minutes to complete!

Many thanks
Lewys :)

Recycling guitar strings themselves is probably not an option - how do you undo corrosion from sweat and skin oils, or remove flat spots on the strings from the frets, etc? Particularly for lighter gauge electric guitar strings they just won't tune and intonate well and will be significantly more prone to breaking. But the metals can be recycled and put to other uses and indeed most metal industries rely on and actively promote recycling as the monetary and energy of mining and processing are enormous.

Where I live in Paris, the city collects recyclable waste, including metals and even small household appliances and electronics. Glass is collected separately and I never have to walk or travel far to find a drop of point for clothes.

Prices of Ni and Co (and many other elements) have gone through the roof in the recent years. There are many companies specialized in remelting scrap metal and recovering these expensive elements. From purely a business view point I would say that a company that would recycle strings only would not last a quarter.

I don't see it as being feasible in and of itself as a profitable business. However i'd gladly GIVE my old strings in to someplace that would at least put them into mixed scrap. I've gotta a big box full of used guitar and bass strings now.

I recycle them like this: I use them. I change them for new and put the old ones in a box. If I break a string, I always replace it with a used string. When they break or are too cruddy, they go into the recycling bag with metals.
