Hi guys!

I am a student in the netherlands (I study materials) and I am looking for a scheme which explains how string are maded. I need to know what are the material which are included in each string, and what are the thickness of each layer of material of the string.

I hope someone could help me.

Strings in general? There are lots and lots of different types. Electric guitar strings are usually made from either nickel, type 430 stainless steel or nickel plated steel. There are lots of variations of this, with various coatings put over the top, etc. and even gold plated strings.

With regards to your question about the thickness of windings, the best bet would be to buy a few sets from different manufacturers and measure with a micrometer. Look also at the shape of the core, many use hexagonal cores as opposed to round cores.

Hello dlloyd,

Thank you for your post. The use of a micrometer to measure te thickness of the coatings seems good to me.
Ernieball doesn't want to give me such informations probably to protect their products.
