the bass player in my band has been borrowing his friend's bass for the last few weeks.

it looks exactly like a 4string stingray, except the headstock has 4 in a row tuners, and a different brand name on the head. Ive forgotten the details, but his friend had told him that the it was a factory stingray that hadnt passed the inspections test because of a knot in the wood or soemthing, and that in such an event , the product was sold to some secondary company where the headstock was replaced and resold... at first i thought it sounded like crap but is there any truth to this?

i think he said something about it being one of leo fender's companies.. i was looking on the wikipedia page for leo, and perhaps the company was G&L guitars? i honestly cant remember though

Anyway, the guy's loved the stringray copy or whatever it is, and looks like he might be in the market for a real stingray. I'm just wondering if i can get any more information on what it is that hes been playing, whether it really is a musicman that failed inspections test or a knock-off.

thanks

also, just looking quickly at the musicman instruments page, the colour he had doesnt seem to appear on the list of options. the bass is a sort of dark transparent red
