Hi everybody
I'm struggling to figure out what the problem is with my guitars.
I have the JP 6 strings and the Luke models guitars both equipped with D'Addario 0.9/0.42 strings set.

Problem I'm facing is related to the D string.
It breaks quite often... most of times occours to that string only (95%) whilst during last gig I faced the problem with A string instead.
So far I never broke E, B, G that sounds to me more logical.

Anyone has experienced same problem?
Is it a problem related to the bridge, to the strings, to my picking style?

Any help is appreciated.

Regarding your strings :

D is for D'Addario : you break these often.
A is for 'Addario : you break these too.

E is for Ernie : you have 2 E's, and you don't break them !
B is for Ball : You don't break these either

Ernie Ball makes strings.
D'Addario make them too.

Hmm, there's a pattern emerging here. ;)

I think you guitars are trying to tell you something :D

Possibly try different strings but if it is consitently those strings and in the same spot, i'd file the saddle part down a little to make sure there were no rough spots on it that the strings could catch on.

1. Try a different brand of strings. I can highly recommend the Ernie Ball RPS strings.

2. Where is the string breaking?? At the saddle? At the Nut?? It is possible that the string is either not sitting in the saddle properly, or that there are burrs that have built up. The saddles may even need to be replaced.

3. Try using a lubricant, like Big Bends Nut Sauce, anywhere that there is string contact: the saddles and the nut.

I would change string brands. I've used Ernie Ball strings the whole time I've been playing, and I only broke the high E string one time. That was when I was just starting and I pretty much attacked the strings, and I also had them on a long time.

EDIT: That reminds me, I need to change strings on my JP!

I've never broken a string on my EB guitars. Pick attack and strength may be a factor in your frequent string breakage.

Same here, i'm into my 5th year playing EBMM's and Ive never broken a string, previously I would break strings on my strats almost every gig, what a relief that I found EBMM! Plus they make the AL you know.....

Yeah, I have had string breakage issues, typically the D string and sometimes the A. I never seem to have a problem with the other strings.
I use Super Slinkys too.

I think it may be related to heat or humidity. Last summer we were practicing at a place that was really hot and sweaty. I used to call that jam room "Broken String Palace".

i agree with the guys - swap to ernie ball slinkies for a start.

the daddario strings are TERRIBLE.. i have particularly acidic sweat, which rusts strings very quickly.

i was doing a show once where i had a set of slinkies on my strat for about half a dozen performances (theatre shows aren't a sweaty environment so I can get quite a few shows out of a set). I then changed them mid season.. i didn't have any slinkies left so i grabbed the only thing i had, daddario, same gauge.. that very night the strings felt so bad that i put down the strat and swapped to my spare guitar half way thru the show.

every time i've tried them they've lasted a fraction of the time the slinkies do and just feel wrong. Very annoying, considering i have a friend that could get daddario's at cost price for me, but i had to decline the offer.

Don't want to spoil the D'adario bashing party, but it probably has to do with physics more than with the brand. It just so happens that the D String has the highest tension of all, followed by the high E-String.

And yes, I used to break Ernie Ball strings pretty often, as often as others actually. Now my playing has changed (hopefully got a bit better), and I break my strings VERY seldom (though they are not Ernie Ball strings any more).

+1

Same goes for me.

If you you do a lot of bends and may be use the vibrato a lot, the strings will become prone to breaking earlier.

Sometimes you will even find small grooves in the bridges, usually at the e1 and b2 strings, where the strings kind of "dig" into the bridge material. These grooves can barely be seen but may be the reason for premature string breakage.
A little sandpaper or a file can do miracles here.

Oh, and btw: I use D'addarios and they don't break more or less than any other brand. I just change them regularly, which also helps a lot ;)

I've not broken a string on any of the 3 MM guitars I've had, 2 of them being trem Silo Specials, but locking the trem with 5 springs. I've tried a variety of strings between 9-10 gauge, with a variety of picks, and I do a fair amount of whole step bends and vibrato. If strings break on the classic MM bridges (that's all I can vouch for), then check for burs and work on your technique. It ain't the guitar and it ain't the strings.

As far as I understand the problem is not due to the saddle of the guitar... but to the strings... mmm... with the Music Man EVH I rarely experienced string breakage...

I'll try Ernie Ball strings (almost double cost!) but I'm not so convinced...

Don't know where you live, but no idea why you should think EB strings are twice the cost of D'addarios. I got my last strings here Strings and Beyond - Guitar Strings and Accessories and they seem to sell for the exact same price.

IME strings mostly cost the same with the exception of Elixirs or something like that. D'addario and EB strings are both good strings IMO! I've been using EB strings lately, but have not had string breakage problems with either brand.

Each time you change strings, put a dab of liquid graphite (Nut-Sauce) on the saddles and in the nut slots. This helps stop any snagging where the string touches the guitar. So far I have had NO string breakages whatsoever since doing this.

Also make sure you keep your frets clean. The Planet waves fret polishing system is pretty good. This also helps prevent string wear, and helps them from getting snagged.

Also, as previously mentioned here, changing your strings regularly is always a good idea. My RPS slinkys are incredible :D
