Hi

I have a 78 Stingray bass that has been stripped of its original colour - so good was the job that there are no traces of colour in the grain at all. Also, by the grain of woood, it would have been a painted bass rather than a natural.

Question is, if I have it finished in a Stingray colour, will it further alter the collectability of this bass?

Cheers

Hi trekker...welcome to the forum :D

What I'd do first (if not already done so) is have the neck removed to see if there are traces of any original finish in the body pocket. The finish at the moment may infact be original. If you're uneasy about doing that yourself, a luthier would do it for a small fee (well hopefully). If you're thinking about a refin, the neck will have to be removed anyway. The pickup cavity may also reveal traces of any original finish.

Thanks for the suggestion - the neck has been off recently - no traces of paint there either.

The body has been sanded back - at the moment, it doesn't have any finish on it (unlike the neck which is still laquered)....looks like those matt finishes seen on some basses. Perhaps '78 Rays had matt finish as an option?

Cheers

In the meantime, I checked matt finishes. 1980 Catalogue mentions natural in a "Satin" finish as an option. Haven't heard of it before then.

When you have time, post a pic of the Bass... :) I can host it for you if you don't have the facilities. Just attach to an email at the same address.

Ok - will do! Thanks for looking up the dates. Maybe it was satin a finish, but the laquered neck seems to suggest otherwise. The bass is definitely dated March 1978....maybe they did wierd things back then ;) ;)

Trekker,
Is the body ash?
I am doing my 79 SR and have found an excellent topcoat and or sealer coating.
It's called Fullerplast, made by the Fuller O'Brian company.
It fills the ash like nothing I have used before.
What you want to do is brush on 3 coats at a time, let it sit overnight and block sand with 240 grit dry. Use 3m automotive sandpaper.
If the ash is heavily grained you will need to repeat this at least 3 times to fill in all the pores. Don't forget.....Block sand.
Fender used this as a sealer back in the 60s/70s.
Spraying the Fullerplast works only as a final coat after all the pores are filled in. If you decide to use the Fullerplast as a topcoat sand the final application with 400/500 grit and water.
Do not flood the wood with a lot of water. Use a damp sponge then wipe and sand.
They may also have a Matte or low gloss version.
Check with the Fuller OBrian store in your area.
This looks to be a very scratch resistant coating as per the original finish.
P.S.
There is an acidic catalyst that you must use with this product.
Make sure to follow the correct mix ratio on the label.
Good Luck

Thanks for the info T - bone. I haven't made any decisions yet as to what to do, but your suggestion is definitely up there on the list.

Thanks to Rod Trussbroken (love that name!) for hosting the pics - it doesn't look half bad, so may leave it natural afterall...lol (but hey I'm female, and am allowed to change my mind :D )

Waves to a fellow Aussie - hiya Mark

Great list Aussies BUT yer still forgetting SKUNKHOUR!!! :D
They were just one of those bands that as a Canadian I could listen to and feel a part of the Aussie funk underground.
I did happen to see a small punk show over here too with Spiderbait... not half bad, but that was waaaay back in the day.

As for talent per capita Australia might actually have a bit of a lead but us Canadians have quite a few Monsters of Pop on the world scene too....

the mighty Celine,
the ranting BareNakedLadies
and let us not forget the leviathan known as Nickelback....

ps. Masamax, take it easy on me in potential response to the above list :p
