Mercy - Nice! I like~ :D But near the end the drums drown you out!

Permanence - You're getting drowned out by the gitar! :(

Without Time - Great bass line! I think the singer is getting lost in the mix here. The drums, bass, and gitar all blend together nicely, but those all seem to slightly drown out the singer.

For the first two songs, the guitar drowns you out whenever it goes into distortion. All I hear is the bass of the bass, hard hear some definition. It's not as bad in Mercy as it is in Permanence. Sorry about complaining - I like to hear a well-defined bass in any given song.

But all in all, great work! :D

Shaver,

I listened to all 3 tracks.

The songs are good, the players are good, the performance is good.

The mixing is not so good.

Take your raw tracks to someone who has more mixing experience. Aside from some basic level-setting, the mix needs some space. There are two ways to accomplish this:

1) panning -- the mixer should pan some sounds to different points in the stereo field (not too radically, mind you). When you hear a live band, not all the sound is hitting you from dead center. Usually you've got a guitarist on one side of the stage, bass on another side, drums in the middle, etc. You want to use creative panning to paint a similar 'stage'.

2) 3D layering -- my own term for this.. if you know anything about 3D, I'm talking about Z-axis here. You can create space in a mix by placing some sounds 'near' and some sounds farther away. You sort of layer them by using various amounts of reverb (including none, for 'up-front' sounds, if you choose).

When you take advantage of these two techniques, you can really add a lot of space to a mix so that all the parts can be heard clearly.

So, I liked the band, but not the engineer. ;)

You guys rock! I really like your bass lines. Especially on "Mercy" and "Permanance". The one thing I think would have enhanced the recording would have been to not have so much "phasing" on the cymbals. The only song I think it even worked on a little was "Without Time". I like the pure accoustic sound of the drums and cymbals and think it would make for a more interesting sound, but you probably already know that. I think the mix could be tweaked a little, but it's really pretty good. The guitar seems a little overbearing on "Without Time". Keep up the good work.

yeh i totaly agree, and thanks for everyones kind words. this was just a demo so we didnt expect anything to breathtakeing and i think for the 3 and a half hours we spent in the studio, we defenitly got our moneys worth... yeh bass does get drowned out and i'm dissapointed it that, but atleast it doesnt kill everything else.

when we get around to do a full length and spend time on it, everything will sound a ton better, i can garenty it hah..

but thanks everyone

Shaver,

It makes more sense knowing that you only spent 3.5 hrs in the studio. That's not nearly enough time for an engineer to craft a great mix of all three songs. So it was a rush job.

Isn't it a boatload of fun to record in the studio, though?

As for the phasing of the cymbals that Moby mentioned, this could be caused by conversion to MP3 format. I know that my band has some songs with a lot of hi-hat and when I encode them as MP3 the hi-hat sounds phased as a result of the compression algorithm used in the conversion.

i will say this tho in defence of the enginer whos a good friend of mine.. the "phasing" your talking about is i think an affect of the streaming audio that purevolume has which isnt very good qualty, download the song if you would please and maybe that would clear some things up  ... and most of the drums are panned, we even used a room mike in stereo or how ever you say it. and all the cymbles and what not, hi hats, toms and all that **** is panned... and even some guitar. for example the guitar in permenece is panned in the bengening..

but i understand the coments about the bass being hard to hear and getting drowned out at time... though i wish it was always promenint, it is a band and it needs to be hidden some times to makeway for somethen else :(

but thanks for even taking a listin, let alone coment about it :)

Shaver,

I'd be pleased with just one of those songs in 3.5 hrs man.

Spend more time on mixing/remixing them if you can and get them working nicely to bring out the best in all the parts.

Nice work tho

Yeah, they sound really good to have done all three in just 3.5 hours. I didn't think about the "phasing" sound of the cymbals being from Pure Volume. I will download them later and listen again. Great stuff!

Hey Shaver, I enjoyed all the songs. I like the tones you've got going there. I agree with the mixing coments above completely.

I think you did great with 3.5 hours in the studio. You guys must have had your collective crap together when you went in. All bands should be so prepared.

Thanks for sharing!

I threw the songs on a CD and listened to them on the way to work this morning. I was very impressed! I had listened to them yesterday on my laptop speakers - but some things are hard to hear on my laptop.

Good job!

You're kidding?!?

I do some producing for a group that has a similar style to yours. I gave that CD to them to hear. They're good in there own right, but I think they could use some pointers here and there.

I don't really like the sound of the drums, but I like the music. The singer reminds me of incubus. And the last song indeed has a very nice bassline
