Hey, My names Malex and I don't actually own a musicman (yet!)
I'm looking to get an Axis however I'm confused (I don't know a great deal about guitars, I just like to play them and from what I've heard of the musicman it sounds great!) The thing is that there are no local shops that sell them (I live around Portsmouth area in the UK) so it's not that easy to simply stroll into a shop and try one out!

The thing that's worrying me is the Floyd Rose tremolo on the bridge! Does the Axis have a floating bridge so that whenever I try and palm mute I'll end up bending all the strings? I don't ever use any sort of tremolo system as the kinda stuff I play is pop-punk/ska music. If I was to get one would it literally be as simple as removing the tremolo arm and then I could just get on and play as I would with pretty much any other guitar? (I currently use a Fender Telecaster but I'm looking for something with a bit more Balls and Les Pauls are too physically heavy [and common!] for my liking!)

Apologies for being so uneducated on the matter!

a) You can get Axis Super Sport with hardtail bridge (or vintage tremolo if you like)
b) Floyd Rose on regular Axis is bend-down only and not fully floating. So you can palm mute all you want.

So if you don't need tremolo, get the Super Sport hardtail - maintaining your Floyd Rose requires sertain skills and not worth it if you don't use it.

Hi Malex

There are Axis models - SuperSport for example - that are available without the Floyd Rose. My three Axii all have the Floyd, and they are non-floating. They rest on the face of the guitar, and lower pitch only - no wanking back to raise the pitch at all, and none of the tuning instability typically associated with the floating Floyds.

And welcome to the Forum - I have learned lots in my short time here, so will you!

Well the Axis has a "dive only" floyd which means it sits flush with the body. So you font bend the strings when you palm mute. Also if you arent interested in the floyd you can look at a Axis Super Sport. The Axis Super Sport has the same pickups and neck it just has the different trem. It seems to me that the ASS would be more to your liking. You can also just hardtail the floyd by installing more springs into it. By doing this it makes the floyd basically a hard tail. But leaves you the room to change it back if your style of music changes later or you want to experiment.

EDIT : You beat me John

I wouldnt be so harsh on yourself - its a fair question! You've got all the answers above - I used to be a telecaster freak but really love the Axis for playability - I have an Ibanez with a floating trem, and had the same difficulties you mention using that - not with the Axis Floyd tho - great for those country bends! :D

Many Thanks for all your help people! I definately feel more educated on the matter and I'm definately being swayed more towards the 'Super Sport' version! I'll come back once I've actually got one which should be in a couple of weeks and let you know how it's going!!
Thanks again for your prompt helpful advise
:)

Hi Malex

I'm guessing that Nevada have their usual EBMM stock of about one bass then?:D

As EBMM dealers they should be able to get hold of something for you to try, especially as the distributors are effectively just down the road.

Useful shops a little further afield include Machinehead in Herts, Oxford Guitar Gallery in Oxford(!) and guitars 4 you up in Derbyshire that I have successfully bought from by mail.

Good luck in your hunt. An Axis in any model is a great guitar!:D

Malex,

Take it from the voice of experience --- this place is an addiction, and you won't (and can't) just have one MM. They really are like potato chips. I stopped by to ask an innocuous question only 3 months ago. Well, by the end of the week, I'll have 3 MM stringed things along with the others I own. And I wasn't really looking for other guitars!!

Run awayyyyyyyyyy!!!

I have an Axis SS as well -- you won't be disappointed. The trem's really smooth and natural. But it will be your first, not your last, MM.

As stated before, there's no such thing as a stupid noobie question, most of the guys and girl (even BP) will go out of their way to help answer any questions you have, l hope you enjoy your Axis SS when you get it, and it's true, once you join this forum, you'll be buying EBMM guitars left right and centre.

Enjoy,

Scott.
