Stupid setup question (again!)

Ok, I'm feeling like a real dumbass right now. :( I get all confused with my reference frames. If I got buzz between my 1st and 5th fret on my Bongo, which way do I turn the capstan wheel as I am holding the bass like I am playing, towards me, or away from me?

I tried the search function already and just confused myself more.
 
Here's the logic I use to remember -

A tight truss rod = more resistance = less neck bow
Loose truss rod = less resistance = more neck bow

In terms of which direction to turn the truss rod -

Righty tighty
Lefty loose

I use buzz on 1st- 5 shorts loose. That hurts Pullem up

Buzz on 8 or above shorts binding loosen them up.

How this corresponds with bass setup I don't know but it works for me :)

Or maybe even backward to what I said I dunno.

Same here ;) heh, ive been doing my own setup ever since i got my first bass, learning how to do it from touch and feel and common sense.
 
I just put a set of Blue Steels on my Bongo 5. I took off a set of TI rounds, and, I couldn't believe it but I had to add more bow to the neck. I thought the Steels would have much more tension than the TIs. Anyway, the capstan wheel gets my vote for the greatest invention since the bass itself.

Does anybody know who came up with the idea of the capstan wheel? Is EBMM the first/only company to implement it?

I don't know if EBMM invented the capstan wheel but I believe if you order a Warmoth neck you can get the wheel on it.
 
I've seen a "Top Twenty" solid body guitar from the 70s with a capstan truss rod nut. It wouldn't shift.

Odd, Freddy. I took off the stock Slinky's and put on Blue Steels and ended up adding more bow to the neck as well. Didn't expect it either. Thinking about ordering a set of the TI's. I'm getting the feeling the Blue Steels aren't my flavor.
