My girlfriend has been playing bass for a little over a year. She has played my sterling and likes the look, playability, and tone of musicman basses (what can i say she has good taste). She wants one for christmas (cough, i guess id be paying for most of it) and i know a real stingray is out of the question , money wise. She really likes the look of the red SUB (i showed her one online).

Do the SUBs sound any good? Or are they too trebely? Cant treble easily be rolled off?

SUB are great basses if you want a stingray, and don't want to pay the price. but on the other hand, 2nd hand stingray's can be found for the same money than new SUB's.
But it's not a bad bass, not at all!

The price ranges almost clash, i agree. Used stingrays can be found as low as $700, and SUbs at the MAX sell for $695,but that never happens. Theres always a lower sale price, around $500-$600 to be found, and i dont see rays selling used that low.

Id probably look for a used one in really good condition around $400-500 (an SUB, that is).

i love my SUB - i have played a few stingrays, and they sound similar

regarding the treble - yes, it is a kinda trebley bass, but can be rolled off

and red looks best with black :)

This may make too much sense, but since she likes YOUR sterling why not try to find a cheap S.U.B. Sterling? I know there aren't as many on the used market as the standard S.U.B. but it's worth a try.

Im sure if i come across one itd be a better thing, but mainly she likes the red finish ;) she'd rather have the SUB in red than the sterling in any other color.

I bought my used red SUB Sterling on ebay earlier this year.
It took me some time to find one in reasonable condition and at a reasonable price...

Several people (including my wife) said they like the color!

I played a SUB at Long and Mcquade the other day actually. They are really nice basses, deffinatly stood up to all the fenders they had there. Personally Iwould stick the the used sterling market, but if she wants the sub. Grab it, the neck isnt even that bad.

I don't want to be a downer but when you guys break up(and you most likely will  ) you might regret shelling out several hundred dollars for a bass. Of course it's your money, and you do whatever you want. I spent way too much money on those early girlfriends- Don't make the same mistake.

Not to sound like a cliche unrealistic teen punk but

We have been together for a year and a half (today is actually exactly a year and a half) and ive spent plenty on here already that if we broke up, i wouldnt look back to this and go "****" since ive spent equal amounts in jewlery already.

Hi Figjam,

We sell Red SUB Sterlings -- they just might be a little harder to find than other SUB models. The SUB Sterling has the 3EQ whereas the regular SUBS are passive or 2EQ.

I do not, and have not, ever recieved allowance from my parents. I work for Lighting & Electronics Incorporated and build stage lighting equipment. I work 4 days a week during schoolyear and in the summer i work 40 hour weeks.

ya, how in the world did allowance come up? When I was a teenager, I never had anyone buying me jewelry. Your girlfriend is lucky that you spend your hard-earned money on her.... luckyyyyyyyy

I think bass thumper was just a little anxious to jump in on the teenager knocking.

Hate to break it to him but we are people too, we have feelings.

And also hate to break it to him that not all teenagers can be easily stereotyped, as some of you may wish.

Am i offended by peoples comments in this thread? Yes, i think its quite disrespectful whether its meant to be a joke or not. I dont make jokes about you for being over the 40 year old hump.

"When you move to Florida, be sure to send me a postcard!".

I appreciate your words Beth. How does the retail price of the SUB sterling compare to the ray one. Im guessing slightly higher?

For the record, I'm 24,and you seem to be a little too sensitive for your age. Do you know why we made those jokes? 'Cause we've been there before. It wasn't THAT long ago that I was your age and thought I knew it all. You've got a nice bass, a girlfriend and a good job that allows you to buy her nice things-Enjoy yourself and don't be so angry. My joke offended you and for that I'm sorry.

Cheers,
Andrew
