Sorry a Jackson DK is one of the worst guitars I have ever played, my brother has one and loves it but to me it is a total POS, bad neck, hard to string and tune, and just sounds like S**T, but that is my humble opinion, I do not want to spend my whole afternoon replacing strings and trying to tune a guitar when I can take a ball and be done in 1/2 an hour, buy the SUB dude:D

I bought a brand new DK2 lefty for a great price in January. I put a kickass paint job on it and it was one sweet looking guitar at least IMO
guitarshoot019.jpg
But no matter how awsome it looked it really didn't have a great sound. I would only use it when I HAD to have a floyd(pretty much Pantera and VH), even when I needed 24 frets I would just end up hitting a harmonic and continue using my Silo. The pickups and liscensed Jackson floyd were horrible ,though the neck was great to replace those faults would have been $400 (real lefty floyds cost 250!)
I put it up for sale and some metalhead fell in love with the paintjob. I ended up making like $30 on it believe it or not.
Now I won't lie the Jackson was so easy to get distorted, clean though it sounded like complete crap. BUT the distortion was generic, I play through a decent amp and it sounded like it was one of those 10 watt solid state amps cranked all the way up at Guitar Center.
So I have never played a Sub 1(for obvious reasons) but without a doubt it will be better. Maiden will sound 100 times better with a Sub (play the Trooper and HbtN with my band all the time w/ my Silo) When you want to get those clean intro riffs that they do alot a DK2 will not cut it. The DK2 is probably better for death metal since they already cover up there playing with a boat load of distortion anyway. I will take versitile over a "metal" guitar anyday.
just my 2 cents :)

I would go for the sub.
Not sure what finish options are available but black finish with a mirror guard would rock hehe.

I would also have a look on the second hand market and see if you can get some of the higher end EBMM guitars. Personally I would look out for a cheap axis... can do anything on it dude!

I own some of the best built Custom Shop Jacksons, and while those are great, their low end stuff is garbage. Stick with EBMM.

Hi fella, still not sure about the SUB ?!

You might happen to find a pretty good Jackson Dinky from the '80s, but todays models don't hold up. Like mentioned above: Duncan Designed = crap. If it they were the real thing - why would they be cheapo line ?!

Always keep in Mind: SUB1s are made of best components by people who care about what they do - in the US.
You are guaranteed to own a pretty nice instrument if ever you decide do buy a SUB.
Personally I own the one-humbucker-version, but I would advise to buy the 2 HB version for more versatility.
The US-made bridge humbucker the SUB sports is fairly hot enough to get some great heavy metal tones out of it. I normally try a lot of mods on all my guitars (my tech and his nerves second that), but after playing the SUB over my PVs and an EL34 equipped handwired Marshall clone I SURE WILL NOT SWITCH PICKUPS !

Go for the SUB, mate - you WILL NOT regret it ! :D

Duncan Designed = A cheap (probably chinese) pickup with "Duncan Designed" on it. Don't let it fool you. It's really not like real Seymour Duncan pickups. I've owned a guitar with Duncan Designed pickups. I think "owned" points out how i feld about the pickups...

I can't answer your question about the guitar. I never played a Jackson. All i can say is try it out before you buy it. :)

But let me give you some advice. The guitar that Smelly is selling is awsome. Especially for the money. Just buy the guitar. If you don't like it (which i really doubt) you can always sell it. You will get your money (or even more) back because the price Smelly is asking is very low.

The Japanese Jacksons are fine enough. I have a pre-Fender Kelly that's been modded to death. I had the fretts replaced with medium jumbo stainless steel. I put DiMarzio's (PAF pro at the neck, X2N at the bridge) with a Petrucci-esque switch. I replaced the stock trem arm with the Schaller retro fit w/collar, and installed an EVH Dtuna on the Floyd. After sinking as much money into it as the guitar initially cost, it's a pretty nice beast.

The Sub still sounds better stock than the Jackson though. And, funnily enough, costs less than the stock Jackson new.

My congrats on that one, maiden666 !
You made the right decision and will experience that with your own ears in a few days hopefully :D
If ever you should dislike your SUB (which I strongly doubt) feel free to post it in the guitars-for-sale thread and it won't take long 'til somone else will take a grab...

Enjoy the beast !

You certainly made the right decision! Having played a low end Ibanez recently (probably made in the same factory) it was firewood.

I got flamed (hardy har har) once on the E$P forum for using that description about a very low end guitar a guy wanted to buy and modify the hell out of. He should have bought a Sub ;)

You got one big problem after all, SUB - you're telling the truth - and sometimes people just don't want to hear that ;)
