I just noticed that all the files on mysongbook.com are no longer available for download due to legal issues. Apparently the Music Publishers' Association (MPA) has decided to take legal action against sites providing free tabs. Free tabs, and programs like guitarpro are good learning tools for aspiring guitarists, and IMO the MPA is doing this out of greed. The tabs provided are interpretations of songs, made by ear, not copies. What will their next action be? Make it illegal to do covers? Maybe you'd have to pay royalties when you purchase a guitar?

There is an increasing amount of pressure from the record labels and what not on getting tab sites off the 'Net. Powertabs was one of them....which I used. I still have the software and some tabs. I like the program enough to still use it for my own music. However, I believe "technically" tabs of any type are illegal without the artists permission to be posted. That is why mags like Guitar Player get the permission from the publishing company to put music in their mags. With permission, yep, but most sites do not have that permission. I believe it falls under any rendition as well. But, I ain't a lawyer, so don't quote me....LOL

I too was part of the PTA Koogie, and still am as they're starting to open back up their doors. As for the entire legal thing, I believe the MPA (Music Publisher's Association which started the whole thing back in December IIRC) are mainly going after sites that are plastered with adds and popups. I don't really remember the reason for them specifically targeting add-laden sites, but I'm sure it has to do something about them making money.

I just found almost all of the guitarpro files in a big zip file on a p2p program, over 50000 tabs. Don't think I'll need any other tabs any time soon... It's a real shame that they're shutting down these sites, they are a great learning tool. On the other hand, It won't kill me to have to play more by ear. That's also great exercise.

that's a really bad news...

I don't even copy whole songs from tabs. These are those moments when I listen to some song and think: "wow what a cool chord","what a cool progression", "what a cool lick" etc. and then I'm searching for the tabs just to check out that little things. I really don't understand what harm were tabs doing to the label companies

^^ If the tabs are freely available online, as they have been for a long time, nobody buys tab books anymore, or instructional videos and the like. They want that money.
