So i've been looking up and trying different methods of oiling and waxing my musicman necks for a while now.
After about 2 years of experiments i think ive found the best way for me. This is my personal experience, feel free to follow ebmm recomendations but i found that this way works better for me so here it goes:
1- tape up the headstock where the clear coat starts and the body around the neck pocket.
2- sanding: ebmm recomends using sanding sponges in their "how to" video but i find that with regullar sanding paper you get a much smoother result! I use 400 grit first and 1000 grit to finish up. Down-side to sanding paper is that it can only be used once and it clogs up fast, and you need to put even pressure acros the neck to sand evenly, this is easier when using a sponge type sanding paper, but the result is less smooth
3-clean the neck with a verry soft cloth. Preferably coton. This removes the dust from sanding and makes the neck even smoother.
4- oil: whatever sort of oil you use, rub it in and directly back off and buff it in a bit. Otherwise it wil lay a layer on the wood wich is not good (for me) I prefer manny oils over tru-oil wich is verry sticky in my opinion. My personal favorite is skydd oil from ikea, wich is just a transparent mineral oil. It is verry natural, doesnt smell chemical and penetrates and protects the wood extremely well.
5- waxing: i do like using gun stock wax (birchwood casey) but other wood waxing products will do the trick too. The wax goes on, and then i rub it in a bit. If you want it even smoother, repeat this 2 or 3 times to build up a small layer. Step 1-4 makes the neck verry smooth and even, waxing makes it feel super fast and non-sticking.
Well, just wanted to share this because it works well for me. And i could always get a good but never a great result using recomended method. Cheers
