EMG's always have a harsh characteristic to me. Doesn't matter what the volume is set to. Just my opinion of course.

A lot of pickups have different characteristics...what does that have to do with the guy playing a cool rendition of Little Wing anyway?

Maybe harsh isn't the word. To me they tonally have a little 'edge' to them. They have come across to me as too hot. It's all subjective of course.

I couldn't watch it. Great guitar, obviously a very good player, and I didn't mind the tone, but he completely missed the whole feel of the song. Hey, I'm an old fart, what did you expect 
edit: forced myself to go back and try again and glad I did. The 2 "strat guys" really get it. When he comes back in to the duel at the end it's much better. The tone of the Luke jumps out and he's quite a bit more melodic playing off the other guy. All of this is just my opinion of course

Great guitar, very fat but bright sound and the white haired guy can obviously play. However, he should put some feeling in his playing. I don't really like the senseless wanking in the beginning; the duel is a lot better IMO.
