Here is my take from my experiences:
Passive: what I'd owned for years but tried with every amp, pedal, etc. to try & get "THE" sound I was looking for.

Active: first time I plugged it into the amp I thought was crappy sounding, it blew me away. Just about every amp I plug into now, I can get "MY" sound by adjusting the onboard pre.....no extra boxes or gadgets.

What's funny to me is when I let the passive guys play my bass.......the first thing they do by habit is turn the knobs all the way up....morons. My favorite thing is watching them try to figure out the Bongo's knob configuration. :D
