I know I've asked before, but had more questions as to why the f-1 mahogany neck is not going to be finished with the oil/wax combo.
If I understood correctly, mahogany is a softer wood, therefore, would need more protection than maple or rosewood?
If the oil seals the neck and the wax protects the neck from temp changes, etc., why couldn't the same combo be used for a mahogany neck? And, what is the difference between tung-oiling a mahogany neck (which is done) and using gunstock oil?
Thanks,

As far as I know, Mahogany is a more porous wood than maple, which is why it is a softer wood. If the wood wasn't sealed, The neck would warp.

I guess it's just a matter of fact that maple is harder, and is less likely to warp, with a light oil finish, than mahogany.

All that said, I love the unfinished neck, and I hope that I get along with the finished one.

I have a finished Ibanez neck right now and it's fantastic! Hope the F-1 is similar but even better.

My sub is finished as well and I have no trouble with that. The only finished neck I ever had trouble w/ was an old Gibson SG I used to own.

Gibson finishes seem sticky... I had a Les Paul and an Explorer, both with necks that get sticky. The PRS neck finish I can handle.

The Gibson neck are sticky because of the laquer that's what i experience everytime with my LP, but i too don't mind the finished neck.
