I love the glorious tone of a Tele, but they dont call em a plank for nothing. They just ain't comfortable. So as I had a few tele parts in my spares. Some U.S. pickups and MIM bridge plate. I cut out a new pickguard and presto a Tele/Silo.I drilled out the tele bridge,so there's no holes in my Silo that shouldn't be there and its reversible. Feels like a Silo. Sounds like a Tele. I'll use it for a while and if I decide to keep it like this,I'll cut a black pickguard and up grade the pickups.

The pickups are out of a American Standard I use to own. It sounds like a Tele, just more focused, tighter.I'm going to buy some better pickups, not sure which ones yet.

Nice work!

For pickups, how about some Fralins? I've heard good things about Lollars for Strats as well, so I suspect their Tele versions should be great as well. You could also go back to the source and get a Fender set - either the Vintage '52 set or the Custom Shop Broadcaster set.

Giving me ideas. I have a Classic Vibe Squire Tele (pine) that sounds surprisingly good, but can't stand the glossy neck and heavy weight. Maybe in a Sub or Silo Special hardtail?

Marantz, was there any additional routing or other mods needed, other than the obvious pickguard and Tele bridge?

No.I drilled the bridge plate to match the Silo fixing holes,so the Silo body is untouched. Just line up the string holes of both bridges and mark the Silo fixing holes on the Tele bridge to drill. I'm quite surprised by your responses.I thought some would see it as an abomination. When I upgrade the pickups I'll make a black guard and anyone whose interested can have this scratchplate free.

Looks gorgeous!

Have they stopped offering the Silhouettes in natural?

I dont know if ash is an option.5stringer said these were a special run in 89/90. 40 were made with 20 coming to the U.K. One was sold on E Bay last week with a rosewood neck. But any Silo should be ok to mod.

If you need a suggestion, I recently put a pair of matched DiMarzio Area T's into a custom tele that I had made. They're noiseless and the bridge pickup has that little extra punch to it. You get all the tele tone without the hum. But, definately try a few different types of pickups out to see which fits your playing, and style best.
