Firstly, hello all.
I have just registered here when I happened across a reference to this forum on ebay, where a guy is selling something called a Luke in some weird green with the martini glass fret board markers...anyhow
I would like to impose upon you all and enlist your assistance with my delima.
I was at my local guitar shop and I spied a couple of EBMM guitars that the owner had just got in, a Silhouette Special, in blue and a Luke in black. Having only seen passing reference to MM guitars in the past I had never seen nor handled one.
I was instantly impressed by the feel and weight and on closer inspection was stunned by the quality and understated attention to detail. This was an obvious players instrument. The neck felt amazing, locking tuners and v'ed bridge saddles. the knobs and switch felt smooth and solid and the EMG's looked the business and promised tonnes of variety. Then the price tag fell into view!
I realized that at this price point I could be getting a great Custom shop Les Paul or Strat.
Before I commit I would love some honest advice on this model, it's pros and cons or is there a better EBMM!
I am still a bedroom player, I love the bluesy styles, SRV etc.
I have a couple of Strats and would be selling one to finance the trade to the MM.
I am starting to jam with others and looking to eventually get into gigging. I have only seen the one Luke and it is Black, however he would be happy to order me any colour that was available, I also loved the case.
I would love any advise or comments about this or any other MM guitar, how they sound, play, what the trem is like, the EMG's and any problems etc?
Given the price point I am now in, should I concider something else, LP, Custom Shop Fender etc.
I guess what I'm saying is, before i jump in, as I'm prone to do, is there something I should know?
Comments please, and make it quick as I can't get this damn thing out of my head!!!

As for the price on the Luke I would say that I really don't know because I don't know where you are living and the shipping and import charges are different if your international.....

Slider,

Thanks for your questions! Here is your answer:

You are aware of the quality of guitars (your post indicates this). You yourself said you were "stunned" by the quality of the EBMM guitars you tried.

Then no one needs to comment any further - the guitars "spoke" for themselves!! We here can only confirm your observation.

Since you now see that EBMM guitars are of equal (actually superior) quality to the Les Paul Custom, Custom Strat, and/or PRS, don't you feel they may be under priced?????

So, even at that price tag you mentioned, why wouldn't you STILL pick the EBMM over the others (and they're possibly more money!!)

Slider buddy, you know the truth now - go do the right thing and get that MM guitar! :):) Welcome to the "truth"!

Slider, I sold my Strat to get my Silohouette Special. Even though there was sentimental attachment to the Strat, I don't regret it at all. IMO Musicman guitars are similar enough to Fenders so it wouldn't be a big change for you. But the MM necks are way better IMO.

I know what you mean about the price... it took me a few years to decide to make that comittment. But I am glad I did. The price is what it is, but with EB guitars you do get your money's worth.

I would say plug it in, play around with it. I think you will like it better than a Fender... I know I did.

If you want a guitar that will never let you down in any way what so ever and will let you get to the business of making music and not fighting your instrument. The Music Man guitars are the way to go. No joke, no hype, no gimmics. Just plain good craftsmanship by people who know and love what they are doing. It shows in every last one of their products.

Lukes got a skinny v neck,EMGs and a sucked boiled sweet roundness to its looks...did you like that more than the regular C neck,Dimarzios, angular bevelled body horns and shark tooth pickguard on the Silhouette?the neck and pickups should surely decide it for you unless the Special is a hardtail, has a maple board which you got to have, or you like black/dont like blue

Personally I couldnt ever get on with the Luke neck..not enough meat on it. I like the Silhouette neck a lot and I like the chunkier(assymetric) Axis and even chunkier Albert Lee necks too.you can wrap your lazy thumb right over the top of them bad boys...ymmv with each type of neck..they're all markedly different from each other

I think you should go back and play that silhouette special, it sounds like it would be more to what you would like, the Luke is awesome but I think the silo speical is more stratty and you can swap pickups if oyu want to try new sounds, also a great neck and very light and comfy -

Welcome Slider, so you live in Sydney? These guitars are so well made and I highly recommend them. Here are some other Music Man models I recommend you look at. Drop me an email if you need any assistance?

I don't know what LP or Strat prices are in Australia, but over here they are a little too proud of their stuff. Being a dealer of (and have worked on) all three brands I can assure you the quality of the Music Man (putting it kindly) puts the other two to shame. A custom shop LP is at the very least $3000 USD while most Balls being around half that. What do you get for a Custom Shop LP? Not bloody much, sometimes some guy's name on it other than Les Paul's. Custom shop Fenders? They beat them up for you and charge a grand or so extra for the rusty hardware. No thanks. I'll take a BFR JP or Luke over the greatest thing the other two have to offer any day. Heck, I'll take a SUB!

As a customer AND a dealer I get the best support from Music Man hands down. Lots of examples that I'll leave out.

Welcome to the forum! Hope to see you get some balls soon! Oh, if you buy the Dargie Delight Luke (the one on Ebay) I will be coming after you in your sleep. Don't worry, it will be painless and you will never know ;) Dang low funds...
