BP, I still haven't played a Bongo 4H. Would you say this is just as true for it, as it is for the HH?

I can't speak for BP, but my Bongo 5 Hp fretless stands out really nicely in the mix.

If you choose to listen to the clip, stick with it and notice how the bass, guitar, and drums are all very distinct in the mix. None of the ol' amazing disappearing bass act here.
I've had the opportunity to play a Bongo 5H for a few days, thanks to the generosity of Mobay, and within days will receive a 5H of my own. While I love my HHp to death, I suspect the H will be the go-to bass for gigging because of simplicity and light weight.
After all, the subtleties of the HHp's tone vs. the H really don't matter a heck of a lot when it's 1:30 am and the room is full of sweaty, drunken revelers, y'know?

Very true. However, what I like about the five position switch on the dual pickup StingRay is that you have five different basses in there -- and can change among them by the flick of a switch. Less variations and possibilities than with blending, but also less subtleties to handle at 1:30. Been there, flicked that.

It has me to the point I can hardly wait to play it even when I have no gig to play..
But when you gig this bass man dose it SING, it gives everything I ask of it .....
The sounds are awesome simple as that.
I have nothing but words of praise for this bass.
After 40 ( in 40 years you can play a lot of different basses) some odd years of hunting for "THAT BASS" I have found it in more ways than anyone can imagine. (unless you own one) I just wish it hadn't taken all this time

Amen to that brother! I had been using my P bass for the Motown / old school funk stuff, but since I put flats on the Bongo, I can play most styles of music. Today I was working out with the Stax 50 yr. aniv cd set and Little Feat's Waiting For Columbus live. I was playing thru my Korg Pandora PX4B, with my Ipod hooked up to the PX4B; the Bongo sounded fabulous for this style of music, even with the wireless headphones.
I use this bass mostly for gospel and praise music. Even with flats, I can get a very clear and defined (almost round wound) sound from it. I'm sold on the Bongo...it's a keeper

Phat thanks...how did you get from santa cruz to Iowa? I was just in satna cruz playing at pasatiempo golf course beautiful there...also used to fo to woodies on the wharf...
but back to the BOngo.....each day someone takes the time to figure i out and that is a big reward to all of us

BP what's your take on rounds vs flats on the Bongo? And to everyone, can you regain that bite that the flats lack with the Bongo EQ?

I play roundwound (because Im a real man) but I have played many a bongo with flats and they are impressive as the four bands of eq and the 18v of power make it possible to get the dead tone but also make it come alive

Hey BP, glad you enjoyed your stay. Long story on the move (and everyone asks me that same question) I miss my home town, but Iowa suits me fine. Next time your there in SCrz, try DeLaveaga, a very nice golf course.....my brother Bill is the course marshal for Pasatiempo and DeLaveaga. And don't forget about the clam chowder at Stagnaros on the wharf
