His name is Bakithi Kumalo, he does some great slapping techniques on a fretless. Not sure what effects are used. His website is here >> http://www.boneinthenose.com

As fate would have it, he lives in the neighborhood (Long Island). He plays locally at a club just down the street from me (with a fantastic drummer that I played with for several years while he was studying music; he is well beyond me now.)

Anyway he plays a 5-string electric bass. I didn't catch the name, but next time I see him I'll look/ask.

I was playing that CD almost every day 2 months ago. Amazing sound and style :)

I read an interview with him where he stated that he spent a lot of time developing his own style. He said he wanted to avoid doing the "Jaco" thing. That gave me a lot of food for thought. I always wanted to get that Jaco style. Since reading that, I've started focusing on developing my own way to groove.

It is interesting how we can get caught up in trying to be like someone else. I feel much freer now :)

Im not sure of any of any of the names of the tunes on graceland. But I did see him play on saturday night live with paul simon and (linda ronstat maybe?) and he was doin some killer bass lines. Possibly one of my favorite SNL musical performances.
