Ok whenever I fit a new set of EBs I get this awesome metallic reverb noise as I play the lower strings. But then after a week or two the sound goes away! Is there any way I can stop the sound disappearing, or to slow down its aging in some way?

Have you tried the coated titanium strings? They're excellent and last quite a bit longer. Might be just what you're looking for.

No sorry I've only tried the normal ones. I've used the purple power slinky and I'm currently using the green not so slinky, and they both have similar lifespans as far as the metallic sound is concerned. I'll probably try them after my 56-13s are dead.

You can also get Ernie Ball Wonder Wipes String Cleaner. This will help extend the life of your string by using a wipe after each time you play which will help remove excess buildup which gets between the string windings :D.

Yes - there can be a few different causes for it, and buildup is one of the most common. Wiping your strings after playing will help slow down buildup between the windings which deaden your strings. The coated titanium strings will prevent corrosion which also deadens a string.

I would say at this point it's probably too late. By now, your strings probably have buildup which initiates corrosion in many cases. If you keep buildup to a minimum, it will help to prevent deadening of your strings from the buildup and help to prevent corrosion as well. I'd recommend starting fresh with a new pack :D.

Hmmm well I'm gonna have to wait some time then....before I buy the coated ones are there any disadvantages to it?

I use the coated strings on both of my Stingrays (supers and regulars) and am that impressed with them that i don't think i would want to go back to using the standard non-coated again. I no your talking about guitar strings an not bass but recently talked my Mrs into trying a set of regular(10s) coated titanium reinforced on her Ric-360 as apposed to her usual brand and she seems to like an get on with them just fine.

My Dad on the other hand who plays acoustic and is die hard to the brand of strings that he uses i eventually talked him into trying a set with the attitude of "if you don't like them take them off and change them back to your usual brand". and so far hes just ordered another three sets cause he likes them that much

(on the non EB Guitars that i own I'm using coated power slinkys on the electric and on acoustic coated lights)
