i made a cleaning tube from the pvc pipe to fill with denatured alcohol. i know some use this method of cleaning so i have to ask as it was not mentioned on other threads i searched... does no one have a problem getting the strings in the tube? is there a trick? if trying to push the small end in first they bend and double up and generally do not push down into the tube? of course they are crinkly and bent up from the start cause they were on my bass but isn't everybodys strings bent up when they come off? what's the trick or am i just missing something. thanks. matt.

My method is....

  1. play the strings til they die
  2. buy new ones
  3. fit them, play them again til they die, and then back to point 2.
So far it has worked ;) moral is, it's pointless to try and preserve the life of worn strings, here in London we have a saying that pretty much covers it and that is: "You can't polish a turd" :D

*hint* buy them in bulk on evilbay

Haven't had any problems with my tube, just make one out of 1.25 or 1.50 tubing, and glue on a collar that is threaded for a cap. Got some power slinkys stew'n right now. I have experienced some new strings sounding kind of lack luster, like slightly used strings....throw 'em in the tube, and they sound nice and clear! And yes...my turds are supple and bright:D

this is what I do.

looking at time, effort, and materials needed to try and clean these strings, id rather just buy new ones, its not worth it to me to go through all the trouble to clean em off, when I could just buy new ones, and play.
