Ok here we go. The band were wxcited to be playing at the Santana show, but we did not want to act like rockstars so we thought we would just try to be as pro as possible and soak it all in.

We were met at a hotel by a great chap from the promotion company called Chris who gave us times and passes for our cars ect. Then it was into a blacked out Escalade and off to the venue.

Disapointment 1
Santana did not us play on the main stage so another was built (about the size of a stamp!) in the back area. BUT we were pro and did not let it phase us. We set up all our gear and had a decnt sound check. It was only about 11 in the morning and we were on at 7.30pm. At about 12.30 we were taken back to the hotel so we could meet the man himself. It was full of PR gyus stressing out for the press conferance. So we were briefed about how it was going to be.

2
We got a max of 30 seconds with the man. A quick hand shake 4 photos and then rushed away to the press conference. I did manage to say that i got married to samba pa ti..he said he would play it that eventing then.....nice touch but probably in the set anyway!!!!!!

We had hours to kill so we wnt shopping in a local market for gig clothes!! I realised that i was using the boogie but had no tuner pedal....so i got one of them 2.

5pm back to the hotel and we did our setlis on individual beer mats (so pro!!)

3
The doors were to open at 6 and the dj was ment to be on. However the dj was running late so we go fireds off to the venue and asked to play some covers till he got there. In the 2nd song he arrived and we went to the bar.

7.15pm We took to the stage like a gang. On a mission. We were not going to let anything get in our way now. (apart from a poor onstage sound). WE ROCKED HARD. Had about 3 thousand watching us so not too shabby.

We were tired after puting our all into it. I had to give away all my pics! A couple of more beers and a lot of ppl hanging around us telling us nice things. Then off to the front pit to see Santans (on his massive stage!). He was amazing with Dennis Chambers on drums and full band... outstanding.

Home then bed.

Thanks for all of the EBMM and forum support. We had to do interviews for the local paper and have a tv interview this afternoon. Will give you the web link when i have it. I dont have the pro photos at the m so here are a couple my mate took.

Congratulations!
Concerning all the disappointments, unfortunately that's the way it almost always goes, especially if you're not the main act of the evening. That's one of the reasons I don't like playing festivals with a lot of bands (I don't like the organization part, but I like having a lot of people in the crowd though :)).

+1

Thanks for sharing with us...I've had lots of similar experiences over the years...
Played with the Black Crowes, Cheap Trick, Night Ranger, Filter, Drivin' n Cryin', Toad the Wet Sprocket, the B-52's....and a mess of others.

(sigh) Those were the good ole' days!

Great stuff Jonny!!!
You may have had some disappointments, but how many people can say they opened for Santana? Just a stepping stone my friend.
I'm sure you have more coming your way.
Congrats!

Congratulations!! BTW your guitar looks amazing on stage, the strap is quite cool too. Why don't you make your bassist play a MM too?
