Hey, I went to my local GC 2 days ago because I had heard that they received a few Luke III's and I've been dying to test drive em. Well, while us was there I spotted a new Steve Morse Dark Lord model. At first glance I thought it was a lefty guitar because the head stock was flipped. Anywho, I started playing it through an old twin reverb amp and I was floored. I already own a bunch of music man guitars and my 25th is my main axe, but the DL blew me away. The roasted neck felt perfect in my hands. I love the rosewood neck on my albert lee, and I also love EBMM maple necks, but the DL roasted but non-sticky neck felt like it was an older aged neck with a lot of girth and tone to it. As I started taking the guitar through it's paces I was first amazed by how even and balanced it sounded. The neck pup sounded incredibly warm, but clear (not muddy or dark). The second thing that struck me was how versatile the guitar is. I felt like all of the sounds were very usable. The single coil pup has a slightly softer output, but I found it to be really great for songs where you are strumming and want to really hear each note of the chord, but then you could switch to the bridge pup for a rip your head off solo. It's been a long time since I picked up a guitar and felt like I had to have it, so I felt like I needed to try something that I was really familiar with so that I had some kind of reference point. I picked up a 25th model off the wall and started playing. The 25th is an amazing guitar and extremely versitile as well, however the DL seemed to really resonate. It also seemed to really react to differ pick attacks. I thought it to be more dynamic than any EBMM guitars that I own. Anyways, I've been converted.

I think a lot of the resonant tone comes from the fat neck, my fatter necked guitars just sound better to my ears....

Just love the neck on this sucker. I've made tweaks to the guitar, switching wise, but the neck kills. I love the luke3 as well, and would love to see a little fatter neck on that-yeah, long time les paul player here.
