The difference between Axis and Supersport...

...seems much bigger than I ever realised.

I gave a supersport a test drive at the weekend and was surprised by the difference in weight compared to the Axis (floyd). I know the ASS is ash so there was bound to be some difference but it (the ASS) was just so much lighter it really took me by surprise.

The biggest difference tho was sound, I just couldn't get the same driving, creamy, fantastic lead tone from the ASS as I get from the Axis, then I looked down and noticed the bridge pup was waaaay further away from the strings than on the Axis.

Have any of you shimmed the bridge pup of your ASS to get it closer to the height on the Axis? What was the result? (apart from increase in output ) How does the Ash body sound when pushed to moderate overdrive?

I got serious lust for an orange ASS (enuff with the puns already) but I can't live with the current tone of the bridge pup and don't wanna get one only to start fumbling around with shims for the pups if it's all gonna be in vain.

The weight of the floyd is significant. I always think this when I play a trem vs. a non-trem Morse.

My ASS has shimmed pickups. They sound phenomenal. Setup will also affect string/pickup height. But they are the same pickups - so you shouldn't have any concerns.

What can I say, the ASS has the same sound and is more versitile. If you don't need the Floyd, it's the way to go

Hey Dodge,

the supersport body is ash if fitted with MM90's, if it had the dimarzio humbuckers as you get on the axis then the body is basswood...

I'll be getting my mm90 Sport (non super!) soon...

My ASS has shimmed pickups.

I got to say, that non guitar folk would really be wondering what the hell you're talking about!!!

i've always thought my axis ss body was basswood. i shimmed both of my p'ups with a block of med. density packing foam. i get much more tone out of my axis ss now.

On the humbucker equipped models, the ASS pickups are set lower than the regular Axis guitars. I had the bridge 'bucker shimmed on my ASS (not as painful as it sounds!) so the output is consistant to my other axi.

So a few of you have shimmed the pickups and the sound is pretty much the same as the regular Axis. Oh, and the body IS basswood.
