Anyone managed to get anything close to this sound on a Stingray?

In the early days he used Jaydee basses, later on Status and a whole load of other customised stuff. I've played Jaydee and I used to own a Status. They both have a fairly Mark King-like tone. He uses light gauge strings but I'm not sure of what effects he used. I haven't been able to come up with that sort of tone on either of my Rays.

He played an SR 4 and 5 on the guaranteed album, so you should be able to get that tone. As far as his classic World Machine era tone, I don't think you are going to get that with a Ray. I think that tone is a product of the pickup placement (two humbucker with true close bridge humbucker), neck through body construction of his Jay Dees and Alembics, and of course his fingers -- and thumb! :) . Even the two pickup Ray does not really have a true bridge located pickup (close to the bridge like a Jay Dee). Maybe the two H Bongo could get close (it has a true bridge located pickup), but I don't have enough experience with Bongos to say for sure.

btw, his Status sound and his Jay Dee sound are pretty different. I like the Jay Dee sound better, to me it has a more complex tone.
