raises some questions for me.....The headstock is very obviously finished, but from the nut, and continuing down the back of the neck, it appears to be unfinished.

The strange thing is that it doesn't feel like unfinished wood - it feels smooth; very slick - but does look unfinished. Is that portion of the neck actually unfinished, or is that a special treatment?

Any help would be appreciated!

It's like that for all the SR's. It's an unfinished neck. But it gets the job done, ya? :)

Going by the description, the neck is infact finished....with oil and wax. The wood isn't left bare. Some use the term "unfinished" to describe the oil/wax as opposed to "finished" to describe a laquered neck on earlier Basses.

Well I don't know whether you figured it out when playing, but the purpose of the 'unfinished neck' is speed. It is MUCH faster than the lacquered ones where your hand literaly sticks when you slide or leap in the fretboard.

I ordered it from Chuck Levin's in Wheaton, Md. When it (FINALLY!) arrived, it had a black pickguard, but seeing SpectorBassGuy's abalone job inspired me to experiment.....I put on a black pearl pickguard and chrome knobs with black pearl on the top.

I'm in love with it.
