I just love the looks of the Morse Y2D prototype with the cream bobbins on the humbuckers and single coil. I am actually thinking about converting my Morse to a Y2D by adding a custom pickguard. It would be opaque of course. A clear one would look pretty stupid given the top route:D.

A couple of things, I want to use a 5-way switch and use the 3-way toggle. It act the same way it does now but with the straight single coil instead of the slanted one. I also would like to change out the pickups. I want to get a st of Morse pickup (DP-200, 205) with cream bobbins. I would also get a single coil with a cream cover.

Now, with all that said, I need to think of a pickguard color that would work with the blueburst and pickup bobbins' color.

Any ideas?

Sir, why dont you just get yourself a Y2D, and change all the pickups with creme dimarzios steve morse sets, together with chrome knobs and creme selector switch? not forgetting a single coil creme cover too (you need to replace the sinlge coil pup).

I got a thought like you once when I got my Y2D, but what the heck after owning it for a couple of months. Yes, my creme wares are still with me now...

If you have a Y2D, you can see that the single coil is not the normal one fitted with a creme single coil pup cover. Its rather a single coil, with the wires wrapped with a nylon cloth just like any humbuckers. Either you stick a creme sticker over the original purple bobbins, or you gotto change the entire single coil pup with a creme single pup covers. Doing so may require you to widen/enlarge the single coil pup hole on the transparent Y2D pickguard.

Gotcha, but that's if I got a Y2D. The single coils on the Standard Morse are just regular single coils.

Go with a creme pickup cover, 2 dimarz steve morse set, and a new guard, you are done.

That's my plan; however, I'm having trouble with the color of the pickguard color. I don't really care for the black. I was thinking of a cream color from Pickguard Heaven. But again, I don't know. Something that would not necessarily match, but coordinate might be nice. You know, kind of like a white or cream body color with a tortoise guard. Tortoise would be cool with the cream pickups; but dog-ugly with the blueburst.

Well, after doing several designs through Kisekae, I really couldn't find a pickguard that meshed withe the cream bobbins or the blueburst finish. I might just keep the black pickups and do a Y2D pickguard in black, with a hole for a 3-way toggle...

Hey Butch, dont mind me sayin this, you should ditch this idea. Trade your Morse for a Y2D. Dont think you will get the brighter sound of a Y2D (maple capped body), for all these work on a standard morse. Really, not trying to be discouraging here, my friend.

No worries, I understand where you're coming from. One year ago, almost to the day, my wife bought me a Y2D for my B-day. I traded it for the Standard Morse I have now. I thought I needed the slanted pickup for its tones...Big regrets now.

I would love to do this with my Morse. I like the standard model better than the Y2D, but I never use the second single coil or 3-way toggle.

My two cents-

I'm not crazy about the creme pickups, that's just me. I'm also hard pressed to think of a pg colour that would suit it. But there's probably something.

If you want to go towards the Y2D switching with the Morse, why abandon the neck single? It's cool to have when you need it (quacky bits with the bridge single, etc.). So unless that 3-way toggle gets in your way, why not leave it?

As for the switching, you could easily just wire up a 5-way lever and go the Y2D switching route. (With the extra 3-way toggle for the 'add neck single'.) If you like that switching scheme better, and I can see how people would, then why not.

That leaves the 'add bridge' 2-way toggle. With the Y2D wiring you wouldn't need it. But since it's already there, you could wire it up as a coil split. The bridge 'bucker is great when split and quite twangy, so it'd probably be right up your alley.

And the added benefit here is that you don't need to get a new p/g. Just a 5-way Super Switch.

I made a crude drawing, but it would look something like this. I don't like the black guard with it...

joined this thread rather late ...

Butch, did you know, Steve had a early proto with cream bobbins (standard - NOT Y2D)

what you finally plan sounds like Dave B´s Morse + 3way toggle:

Hey Banjo, thanks loads for that post. Two questions:

1. Do you have a bigger photo of Steve with his prototype, perferably color?
2. How do you like your standard-to-Y2D mode?

Hey Butch,

1. You can find all the pics I have with the early Morse proto here. I think it was Steve playing with Kansas, but I´m not sure. Picked them up somewhere, but forgot details. I don´t have them any bigger.

2. The Y2D mod is not mine, it belongs to DaveB. It has also another finish (similar to Mystic Dream). Read here
Steve even played it at the clinic in Dave´s shop

Thanks for the Photobucket link. Very nice pics. I believe that one is the prototype of the Standard model. How did He like DaveB's Standard-to-YD2 guitar?

Tommy, thanks for those. You have renewed hope. IMO, the blue pearl would be pretty bling.:D Let's see if I can create a cool avatar. Oh, if I only had Photoshop...
