Here's some rough live rehearsal recordings of my Pink Floyd tribute band with the heavily abused '83 Stingray I rescued off eBay recently. Strung with "acme" flats and running through a Markbass LMII into two SWR 2x10 cabs I'm really happy with this bass as a workhorse. Considering every Floyd song recorded while Roger Waters was in the band featured a Precision, the Stingray doesn't sound out of place at all.

Recordings were done with a Zoom H2 portable mp3 recorder.

Sounds pretty convincing to me Mark. I have the H2 myself, not a bad little unit. Sounds like the Floyd band should do well.

I forget, what's this "Acme" flat business? Is it code for that European rubber band variety or the shiny metal plating like what gets used on bumper bars of yore...?

Thanks Richard, we're still looking for a vocalist who can do a better job than the rest of us, but I'm happy with how the band is coming together.

And yes, "acme" is code around here for the Austrian rubber bands.

It sounds really good. The vocals are pretty good.

Thanks for your kind feedback. I agree that the vocals on both the songs I posted would be adequate for a generic cover band who happen to do a couple of Pink Floyd songs in their set, but for a tribute band playing solely Floyd material I honestly think the vocals need to be stronger. That said, some songs are better than others vocally so with some more focus on vocals instead of the musical side of things we might be able to pull it off without adding an additional band member. Currently there are 4 of us who are contributing vocal parts on different songs, so it's probably a matter of working out which voice suits which songs. Some Pink Floyd vocals are a killer, for example the ascending lines in Shine On You Crazy Diamond at the end of each verse.

Just need those backups on the "When I was a child, I had a fever..." lines for Conformably Numb.

Everything sounds spot on though. The guitar leads are great, the vocal phrasing is just right and everything else is as it should be.

Those Zoom H2s are great, aren't they? I picked one up not too long ago and it's a great tool for capturing jams and other stuff too.

I am impressed by your band's attention to the little details that make those songs "Pink Floyd" songs. They come across as not being played by a cover band , but being played by someone with pride of "ownership". Nice job !! My suspicion is you and the band are going to KILL live!!! It would a great show to see. Keep up the great work , and remember...... if your not having fun, then the audience probably isn't either.

sounds good, but as a minor detail: i'm missing playing techniques such as staccato
on the song Money

but then i'm just refering to the orginal Pink Floyd recordings...

I'm self taught, so I don't even know what staccato is, so I Googled it .....

"Notes identified as staccato are often played or sung abruptly and short"

Roger Waters played with a pick, and I play fingerstyle, so that's probably the difference in technique you're hearing?

If it's the recording you're talking about, it probably wasn't Roger playing it....

More fuel for the internet conspiracy theory that Gilmour played all the bass parts on Floyd's recordings while Waters was in the band? I guess that also means that Waters mimed his bass playing at all those live gigs at which he was present on stage over the course of 20 years

Well, Gilmour has said in quite a few interviews that for the recordings Roger was reluctant to play.

As for the live shows, have you seen the youtube clips from the wall tour?

I too have read interviews where both David and Roger said David recorded alot of bass tracks.
I remember one where Roger said to David, "hey thanks for getting my bass playing mentioned in a guitar player mag", and them laughing about it.
Roger was a songwriter and producer...that's where "it's" at, he didn't particularly care about bass playing specifics and who played what. I think the first song to bring the whole thing to light was the bass soloing on 'Hey You'.

But on a Musicman note...David did own and play a nice sunburst StingRay back then. Could it have made it on some PF cuts? Who knows.
