Hi all. I have an opportunity to purchase a 1982 Stingray in pretty much mint condition. It's finished in candy apple red and has a rosewood board. This combination would be rare I guess for that year as I've only ever seen basses from that period with maple boards.

I've owned a 78 Stingray in the past and it was a fantastic bass. Have also owned or played the odd later model rays and also find those nice...

I've been trying to do some research on the early 80's stingrays and from what I see they can be pretty hit and miss as far as build quality and apparently a number suffer from neck problems...

The one Im looking at doesnt seem to have these issues. However, it's overseas and I cant get to see it in person and play it, so it's a bit of a gamble...Im only going off what the seller tells me.

It doesnt have an original case either. I would expect to get it landed here for under $1300.00 so Im thinking thats not a bad price for a bass like that.

My question is, does anyone know what the pickup and electronics are like in these. Are they the same as the earlier pre 79 ones...

any input would be most welcome

Fretted Rosewood became available in addition to Maple in 1980. Red became available towards the end of the Pre-EB period but I've never heard of Candy Apple red for that period.

The preamp would be the same as the late 1978 (early 1979) preamps when the black epoxy was deleted and the pole pieces in the pickups were shortened.
