Thumb Rests

I have a beautiful Sterling which has a professionally installed thumbrest that looks professional and classy. The ONLY thumbrests worth installing on MM basses are the BRASS versions which come in Black, Chrome, and Gold. Mine is black brass on a black pick guard with a Sunburst body. Don't buy the cheap plastic thumb rests! The brass ones are available at Guitar & Bass Parts Resource. Have it professionally installed (they drill through the pick guard and body) and it will look perfect like mine. It made my Sterling H the most playable bass I've ever owned since I'm used to resting my thumb on a neck pickup but prefer the size and sound of the Sterling over my Jazz basses. I will download photos shortly, but for those of you feeling like they'd like to have a thumb rest - these brass beauties are the only way to go. Mine is installed parallel to the strings, above the E string in about the same place as a Jazz Bass neck pickup. It also does not interfere with slap playing at all. It's awesome.

Hey Boris,

Neat idea. I used to be a traditional P thumb plant type of guy, but now I just plant on the lower string and move from there. I found I could move with greater freedom then. I would still like to see some pics though. I have a Sterling in my lap right now and can invision what you are talking about I think.

Here are the photos of the thumb rest on my Sterling. This is a black BRASS thumb rest (not the cheap plastic ones) which also come in chrome and gold. You can buy them at Guitar & Bass Parts Resource.

I had mine professionally installed and I think it looks beautiful and classy. The black on black (with black screws) makes it almost invisible (though chrome would have been cool too). Functionally, I couldn't be happier since I played Jazz Basses for so long before the Sterling became my main bass. I love the sound of the single H, but the protruding screw mounts and the bridge location just doesn't work for my playing. The thumb rest solved it all! It also does not interfere with slap playing at all. This thumb rest would obviously work perfectly with Stingrays as well. Have it professionally installed however! Enjoy...

Have you tried a Sterling HS? It comes with a thumb rest that just happens to be another pickup!! I love mine, the variety of tone is awesome!

Interesting options. I really don't need a rest. I like to play down by the bridge anyway, so I just rest on the pickup.

A screaming alpha is Navy slang for a person engulfed in flames.

Class-A (alpha) fires involve solid, organic combustibles - like people.

I don't see a need to drill through the pickguard . . or body??!!

I bought the bass below with the thumbrest attached
w/some quality double stick tape; and I had a very hard
time removing it!! Once removed, the pickguard/bass was
as good as new.

Ive not been on the forum for a couple of days.For a while ive been wondering whether to fit a thumbrest on my sterling hs and now there's two threads about the very same.
Ive tried resting on the front pickup but my thumb naturally falls just to the front of the h and i prefer the tone towards this area of the strings.
After some trawling i came across said guitar box company and emailed them to see if they could make me one up to my measurements in ebony.I got a very quick and curteous reply and it'll be done and shipped by tommorrow.
American customer service from an English company,now there's a thing !!
I dont own the company and have not dealt with them before so if you're in the market for a thumbrest give them a shout.The guy's name by the way is "Guy"

I'm also thinking about a thumb rest for my Sterling HS. There are some tasty tones that you can get in that area b/w the two pickups and I'd prefer not to have to adjust my technique to play in that area. I intend to just use some double stick tape.
