Off Topic Timmons - Electric Gypsy

Does anyone know what Andy Timmons set up is? I'm particularly interested in his sound on Electric Gypsy.....that thick bluesy breakup. I'm not sure if he's getting this from preamp overdrive or poweramp saturation or a combo of the two. Does anyone know what pedal/s he might have used in his chain? Is there a touch of chorus in there too?

I'm currently using a Keeley Ds-1 (into a Fender Super Champ XD) for distortion....it's obviously not the same. Though with distortion levels all the way down...and output level up I can acheive some similarities to this sound....but not satisfactory. Do I just need to add an overdrive pedal? I might be crazy, but I'm trying to get close to this sound at living room volumes.

I'm also currently looking to add an amp.....a 112 or 212 combo that will help me out a little here.

This is sort of a novice question, but that's where I'm at with it. Thanks for any input.

I saw somewhere on a video posted on the forum that he uses a BB Preamp into the clean channel of a MESA Lonestar.

definately.........

I certainly can't afford a Mesa LoneStar.....a bb preamp is not out of the question though.......but might consider a Digitech Hardwire Tube overdrive.......I even hear good things about the Bad Monkey.....and they are dirt cheap.

also it was the two delays that he uses that was throwing me a bit....does sound a bit like chorus....

got some tinkering to do tonight. :)

certainly not out of this world....just new to me....I hadn't heard this guy until recently....just thought that sound was pretty sweet.

I think my amp is a little boxy.....need to get to a 12" speaker.....or maybe a Delta Blues 15!

Hey Luv, go buy Andy's Resolution CD its probably best instrumental album released in years and years.

From the Electric Gypsy tab I bought from Andy's website:

"I recorded Electric Gypsy in 1995 with my Ibanez prototype AT100 guitar tuned down a 1/2 step."

"The song was recorded live with my band using a VHT Pitbull 2X12 Combo amp with no pedals, just the channel switching of the amp. The main portion of the song was on the mid-gain channel, though you can get a similar sound by running your amp clean with a Tube Screamer-type pedal in front of it. Then switching to a heavier tone from bar 64 out."

Andy is indeed a great guy - I got a personalized signed photo from him with the tab I ordered.

Believe he used his new (used) Strat Plus with Lace sensors into a Diezel Einstein. Sounded pretty darn good!

he used a VHT pitbull 45 for the studio recording of the song. now, he uses a BB preamp into the Lonestar.

try keeping a healthy amount of gain on the DS-1 and back down the volume knob on the guitar instead :) I think that can get you closer to that tone.
