OK, OK I'd better clarify my drinking tip.
I never drink on or at a paid, professional gig; you won't see me with any sort of drink, except for a bottle of water with the cap on!
At a blues jam, party or any other type of non-paid, non-serious gig, I've been known to... enjoy myself. Hell I've had gigs where the pay was in beer.
And the more complicated, "We'll pay you a couple of hundred bucks and all the beer you can drink!" What do you do with that one? I usually don't drink on those either, but I might stock pile a few beers for the load out.

This should go without saying, but since this thread is for "beginning bass players"...memorize your fretboard, at least up to the 7th fret on all strings to start. Know BEADGCF. I've worked with a lot of church "youth group" bands and it never fails...you get a kid that bought a bass, wants to join the band, can play every metallica song there is, but has no idea what notes he's playing. At that point there's almost nothing you can do, but send him home and say "Don't come back until you can show me every note on at least 3 strings".

Sounds like me, only I'm not a kid nor can I play every (or any, as far as I know) Metallica song.

I should have said "you get a kid that bought a bass, wants to join the band, can play every metallica song there is, but couldn't play a B-flat if you gave him 10 minutes to think about it."
