I just got a really good deal on a Bongo at my local GC. As part of the deal, I did not receive a hard case. I have always used a gig bag. The salesman at GC said he could get me a hard case for $100. Do you think I should spring for it?

I hang all my basses at home and use
a bag when I venture out.

I say screw the case and buy a bottle
or two of something nice

You do realize that unless it's a Bongo that's been sitting on the wall for over a year, the case is supposed to come with the bass. I always like hardshell cases even though I will occasionally use a gig bag. Whether or not you should spring for a C-note to get one is up to you and how you transport your basses. I'm the only one that handles my basses, and they're never in dangerous situations. I could get by with a gig bag if needed, but I prefer to use hardshells whenever possible.

Yes. The salesman told me that the Bongo had been there for a year. Jan 2005.

I have a hard case that I can carry either of my Bongos in. In fact, my LE Buttercream is in it right now. The case it came in is shoved under a bed to keep it pristine.

When I gig, I have a double gig bag that both of the Bongos travel in. It has backpack style straps making it much easier to move them in and out.

This isn't really an opinion on whether to use the bag or the case. It's just that I have a friend who wondered why he had some scratches on his bass. He couldn't work out how the scratches had occured. However, with CSI type scrutiny he eventually realised the scratches had been caused by the zip on his gig bag. So, I suppose it's just a word to be careful when putting the bass in and out of the bag.

I use cases all the time - it's just me!

I have been using a gig bag for the past few months on both my Bongos. It offers good protection, and a lot of convenience. Not nearly the protection of a hardshell.

I'd love to find a nice double bag - Larry, which one do you use?

If you desire a hardshell, SKB has a Freedom case will fit your Bongo, and you should be able to get it for around $70.

I bought one of the World Tour bags from samedaymusic.com for $50. I'm not sure I would put a big stamp of approval on it though. It's OK for a while but I'm keeping an eye out for a nicer double bag.

I've been using the VBTC single case, and it's great for my needs. I wish I oculd find one that's similar that'll hold 2 basses.

Hmm....new accessory quest.

I have one of the Dude Pit Levy bags too. It's a little short for the 5 string Bongo though.

Being of the opinion that musical instruments are heirlooms, I always use a hard shell case.

I've been using a Mooradian double gigbag for gigs. It will hold both of my 5 string Bongos and provides plenty of protection.

I always use a hardshell case to carry my guitars & bass.

So, IMHO you ought to buy one to keep your Bongo safe. Explore pricing on a few brands first.. I think some guys here use Gator or something like that and have no complaints.

If the GC rep was offering a real Music Man (made by SKB) case, $100 seems like the going rate for those.

Here's what you need:

This thing is like armor. It's got more pockets and pouches then you'll ever need--it's tough and VERY WELL PADDED. That and it's allot cheaper than $100.

yep, my vote is for the gig bag as well. Been using gig bags for both of my Bongos and besides that, a single gig bag is the perfect partner for an SKB BassSafe for when you wanna fly :D
