You may as well toss a coin, with the responses you'll get to this question... :)

Personally, I tend to like the matching headstocks. I know some folks here don't like 'em no matter what. Some folks have certain combinations where they like a match and others where they don't. I'm not good at that kind of visualization... I have to see it to know if I like it. But I think I've yet to see a MM guitar with matching headstock that I didn't like.

My usual take on headstocks

Maple board - natural headstock, it continues the clean line.

Rosewood Board - matching headstock, adding the third color of a natural just looks out of place to me. Matching just completes the look - Kind of like coordinating shoes and bag (Right BP ;) )

Except for the Y2D and 20th silo. For some reason I prefer these two with non-matching headstock... I have yet to be able to rationalize this one

Cheers!

To be honest i dont realy care that much...i must be getting old. I know the guitar will sound amazing no matter what. I would not let a match or non match put me off getting one.

God i must be getting old!!!!

Given a choice on a new guitar I will always go non-matched. I just prefer the look of the natural top. Used it would depend on how much I really wanted a guitar, but I have turned down some potential purchases because of the matched headstock.

Nothing scientific or something that even makes sense, just personal preference.

To me it’s not about the body color, it depends on the material of the fretboard i.e. non-matching head for maple fretboard, ideally black head for rosewood fb. But since you can only get black head with “matching black body” (LOL), I’ll settle for matched head & body in any color.

It gets trickier with naturals since “non-matching = matching“, heh! :p

I also like the look of EVH's (and others) Fender/Charvel axes with the natural headstock and painted body.

My Axis is a Trans Gold with a natural headstock which is growing on me but I really wanted the matching. My JP and DD (when it arrives) both have matching stocks.

I think EBMMs suit the matching headstock IMO.

For me....don't matter.

I have 2 JP's with matching.......
One JP non-matching

Bongos...all matching (cause you don't have a choice...lol....)

Hence, gotta love choices....

man this is hard. i guess you can only make a decsion when you've seen the same guitar with and without matching head. i saw a pic of a burnt apple luke with matching head, UGLY!!! love mine without.

saw a pic of a sunburst axis SS with no matching head, UGLY!! love mine with. Y2D looks better without too. also, if you buy off ebay you have no choice anyway!!! its the hardest thing to decide on a new one and order it from scratch, so many possibilities!!!
