Howdy all!

Recently picked up a 1997 Silhouette with a Floyd. I had a 2008 Silo with the MM trem but wanted one with the Floyd. Of course, they aren't made anymore, so I found an older one. Paid through the nose for it based on its condition, but I wanted it anyway. ;) A previous owner had obviously not taken very good care of it. All of the hardware is pitted/rusty/worn, and the body has a bunch of dings. The pickups were changed to active EMGs (EMG = YUCK to me) and to make the bucker fit a dremel was used to mod the pickguard. Not in a good way, either. Since they were active they needed a battery, so the control area of the pickguard was bent up in order to gain access to the battery to replace it. The 5-way switch was completely disconnected. I found that rather hilarious, too, as all five of the lugs were wired to ground with separate wires! The body has plenty of scrapes and dings, but fortunately the neck is in surprisingly wonderful shape.

The neck ... oh such a sweet neck! I've never seen one so nice in person myself.

So ... since I will *never* be selling this one, it's being retrofitted with new parts. Since all of the hardware is in bad shape it is all being junked (I still have it all, but it's junk nonetheless.). The licensed trem is in very rough shape, two of the strings couldn't be removed from the locking blocks. The jack plate is worn, and the Schaller tuners have seen better days. Only the string retainer on the headstock is good enough to keep, and even that's borderline. The neck plate is perfect though, so that's good.

It will receive new locking tuners (I know, I just prefer locking tuners for easy string changes), a locking nut,
Shaller straplocks, a new jack plate (on order from MM), matte white pickguard (original is black), matching matte white trem cavity cover (original is black, and broken), all new pickups, switch and wiring (will be using a super switch). I will also (properly) install a battery box on the back. That's because I will be installing a Graph Tech LB63 Floyd piezo bridge and Acousti-Phonic module.

Now, for the body. As titled, "to refinish or not". Since everything else will be nice and clean, pretty much new, I'm thinking about getting the body refinished. With everything else I'm doing to it the body would stick out. MM doesn't do that but I could have them make a new one for upwards of a grand in the same color. The thing is, I would prefer a different color. If I had money to burn I'd have a replacement body made that would complement the neck, but I don't have that kind of money and wouldn't feel right having it copied anyway.

The pics I have of the guitar are attached. Check out the neck - that's mostly why I had to have it (not counting the other reasons why I love this model of guitar). :D The body pics don't look bad, but those aren't the best pics in the world either and they're all I have for now.

Does anyone here know what it might cost to have the body refinished? Know anybody who does that? I'm certainly not about to try it myself!

I would be interested in hearing your opinions as to how much it might cost. I have no experience with this kind of thing.

Thanks for reading and looking!

Very interesting! I'm not wild about sparkle, but maybe a mild metallic or something?

Ok, I just checked out his site. Let's just say I now know where to go. Once I get the money it's a done deal!

Except ... what color? Transparent? Solid? Metallic?

Too many choices! :D

Personally, I'd feel weird onstage with a sparkle guitar. Be really sure that's what you want before you order! Personally I'd go for transparent, maybe a burst. I would have the body stripped and see what the wood grain looks like before making a final decision. Maybe it can be dyed to bring out the grain some more, in which case, I'd definitely go transparent.

Evidently I'm the third guy here to have a Marty Bell refin - mine a large flake gold sparkle on a Strat to recreate JoBo's "Goldie" Strat from the early 2000s.

Marty is known for his sparkles because they're so tough to do, but everything else he does is top notch too as a buddy of mine has a couple pearl refins from him.

I last chatted with him on another project about two months ago and he was about three month backlog then.

I talked to Marty today, he's got my business for sure. He thinks it may have been dyed at the factory and that I might need to go with a solid finish to change the color. We'll see once the body is stripped, of course, but he said he might be able to tell before it's stripped.

Once all the parts come in and I get it assembled with the current color I'll post pics so we'll all be able to see the before and after images.

I'm really looking forward to it. With all the parts I'm replacing it will be almost like getting a new guitar!

Hey Benny,

No worries, if the deal with Marty falls through I always have somewhere else to go. :D

Hello everyone,

Well, I said I'd never sell it, but ... I have to raise some money quickly and it's one of the few things I have that are worth anything. I did get it rehabbed, though I did not have the body refinished due to budget. I installed a Graph Tech Ghost Floyd bridge and Acousti-Phonic preamp, a new matte white pickguard for dual humbuckers (from Ernie Ball), locking tuners, a new replacement jack plate and rear trem cover plate (again, from Ernie Ball), a super switch, and for pickups I put in a set of GHS VEH pups in it. I was thinking about putting a set of Duncan's in it, but I have the VEH pups on another guitar and really like how they sound. Oh, and to get the Ghost Floyd to intonate properly, I had to move the trem posts back about 1/8i nch and route a bit of the trem pocket. I then used flat black paint in the trem cavity and it looks pretty good. Not perfect, of course, but from a short distance you can't tell it was modded. It was a fun project, but I was still glad when it was finished. :)

Anyway, I want to again thank those who replied in this thread. If times were better I would have had the body refinished and be keeping it, but as my mom used to say, it is what it is. I'll still have my el-cheapo guitar to play though, and once things get better I've sworn I will get another EBMM - they're great guitars!

I've attached new pics of the guitar after the changes (more pics in the following post). Looks pretty good and plays great! It's certainly not a collector's guitar now, but it's surely a great player's guitar to take to gigs without worrying about it too much.

Thanks to all!
