To Sell or Not to Sell: Lusting After a Blue Dawn

Hey there everyone, my name is Zach Hudgins and this is my first post on here! I'm excited to be a part of the Ernie Ball community.

Anyways, I thought I'd ask what you guys think of the Blue Dawn LE Petrucci. I like that color and am sort of pondering selling my Pearl Red Burst to get one and wanted to see what you guys had to say. I've also heard a lot about the 20th anniversary Silohoutte (sorry if my sp was wrong there), anybody know how those compare to the Petruccis? Thanks, Zach

IMHO color doesn't matter much, it's how it plays. So if you think a newer Pet will play better, get it.

The 20th is much different than the Petrucci. You should try to find one to play, although they are rare now. Maybe there's a forum member near your location who'd be willing to let you play one?

I own a JP & a 20th. They are really very different animals and I'd suggest you play a 20th before you ditch the JP for one. I actually have JP pickups (an Air Norton & a D-Sonic) in my 20th because I wanted more output than the standard 20th pickups. Something to consider.

As fas as the BD color - it's limited for a reason - it won't be easily available very far into the future. Would I do it if I were you? Well, I like the BD color better than PRB, & if my PRB did not have piezo, those 2 reasons would be enough for me to change. My JP does not have the piezo & I consider myself rather a fool for buying one without. BUT, you gotta do what's right for you!

If you like playing METAL, I would stick with the Petrucci. If you like playing more rock or hard rock music, I would highly recommend the 20th. There are still a few new ones out there.

Welcome to the forum dude! I love the Blue Dawn, but I would investigate to see if anyone is selling one before you sell anything. Good Luck!!

You have some tough decisions there. As you probably know, all guitars sound different even if they are the same model. EBMM guitars tend to be very consistent from one example of a guitar to another one of the same model, but they still all sound different.

I've tried a Blue Dawn JP6. It's a nice guitar, but it's just like every other JP6 sonically (with, of course, the minute variations in tone and feel). I'd say that if you like the PRB, just keep it. Don't get rid of it to get the Blue Dawn. You'll pay a premium on the Blue Dawn. You'll also lose money selling the JP. Then, you'll get a guitar that pretty much sounds the same, and you'll roll the dice that you'll like the feel and sound of the Blue Dawn one as much as you like your old one. If you can keep the PRB and buy the Blue Dawn, I'd say go for it and get the Blue Dawn. I love my PRB. It has no options whatsoever, but I still love it, and I wouldn't trade it for any other guitar. If yours is a winner to you, keep it and just save up for a new guitar.

Sometimes, people here tell stories of selling an EBMM. Then, they end up missing it, and they buy another one of the same model to replace it. You're surely going to lose money on that kind of a scenario. Plus, you might miss that guitar if you can't get it back, even if you have one of the same model.

My JP does not have the piezo & I consider myself rather a fool for buying one without. BUT, you gotta do what's right for you!

I don't know if I'd buy a JP6 without piezo, but that's only because I already have one. I think the JP6 without piezo sounds different. It sounds fuller, beefier to me than piezo-equipped JPs. I don't know if that's just my guitar as an individual, but I like that. I've also tried another JP6 without piezo, and I feel like that guitar is the same in that it sounds beefier than piezo-equipped JPs. I think that not having the guitar routed for piezo makes for a thicker sound. Anyway, I think the piezo-equipped JPs sound different, and I don't consider it a mistake to buy one that way for that reason. I'm certainly going to add a piezo-equipped guitar now, though. I certainly won't get rid of my non-piezo JP to do it, though. Okay, I've strayed into highjack territory here.

Anyway, only the original poster can really decide for himself what is the right thing to do. Again, let me reiterate, if the PRB is a winner, keep it even if it doesn't have piezo and you want a piezo. Just save up and get one with a piezo later, even if it takes a few years. It's worth the wait IMHO to keep your old instrument and have a new one too.

For as much as I love my piezo equipped JP's, my number 1 guitar is still my bone stock JP for the very reason roburado mentions... it just sound fuller than the other 2.

For the OP, if you truly love the PRB, keep it. While I have 3 of the same model guitar, all 3 of them play and feel different, even with the exact same setup. I would miss each one for different reasons if I were to have to get rid of them, but I would be especially heart-broken to lose my number 1. Its got that mojo that I wouldn't dare trade away for another guitar of the same model simply because of the color.

As others have stated, its really up to you to decide if the color is the most important thing. If so, go nuts and pick-up the LE.

You can play metal with both. The guys from The Human Abstract were at the weekend bash and one of them plays a JP and the other a 20th................
