After some time of not having owned a Musicman, the time finally has come. I can afford one again. Well, it's gonna be a SUB because I need cash for college, but hey, that's also a Musicman.

I've seen several SUB's for sale and right now I'm trying to figure out what the best way to go is. Either go with a regular SUB, or a SUB sterling? I've owned a Musicman Sterling a while back and loved it. The SUB sterling however doesnt have the switch. Also, I can't find any sound samples of this bass.

Does anyone has any thoughts on the SUB Sterling compared to the "regular" SUB?

The SUBs have poplar bodies instead of ash, so they tend to sound a bit mellower than the regular models. The SUB Sterling has a ceramic pickup I think, so it will have more output and a stronger midrange than the SUB Stingray which has an alnico pickup. If you loved the standard Sterling chances are you'll like the SUB Sterling more than the SUB Stingray.

Thanks for the replay PluckyThump. I also love the Stingray. It has more a character of it's own. What I like of the Sterling is that it can do Stingray tones pretty close (when toggling the switch), and has a sound of its own. The "own" sound is nice, but doesn't really have a distinct character (which I love on MM instruments).

The thing I worrie about is the lack of a switch, which could result in 1 sound that doesn't really has the MM sound. :( So I'm very curious about the "standard" sound the SUB sterling has. ;)

im also curious about the sub sterling and wonder if its wired the same way as a stingray, ive heard that its essentially a smaller ray with the 3 band preamp and all,but if it has the mid growl i love,i think id jump on it

I had considered a Sub as a 2nd MM bass but the resale has been so high I am begining to think that a new Ray34 or SB-14 is a better deal as you pick the color and get a waranty

I have a SUB sterling. Mainly got it because I thought the Sterling neck would suit my small hands/fingers better. I like it - but for the last few years I've mainly been playing keyboards so can't really comment in too much detail unfortunately...
