My wife has taken off for the weekend to visit her mom, which as always is my excuse to do all sorts of inappropriate things.
Such as digging into the credenza and pulling out really, REALLY old cassettes to listen to.
The absolute gem I just found is labeled "The Band's First Tape, 12/11/82"
I was in college and in an over-amplified (oh, baby, do I remember that rig), under-talented band. We weren't at all interested in gigging....it was a college town, full of actual professional gigging bands...so we didn't try to do the cover thing.
Instead, we went the "creative" route and just played for the hell of it. At the time the tape was made, we were a three-piece with no vocals, and everything on the tape is original.
I remember being very embarassed about this tape, but listening to it now, welll...it ain't so bad after all. The distorting lens that age provides us has been kind. Listening to it with far older, far more experienced ears, I find that I was a better bassist than I thought I was. How cool is that?
I'm still nothing to write home about (I think), but it don't matter...I've got a paying gig tomorrow (the first with my Bongo). I KNOW I'm gonna have a GREAT time AND get paid for it!..and how much better can it get?
Anyway, lesson learned....if you make any recordings of yourself, especially if you're young, DO NOT THROW THEM AWAY!!! They may seem worthless now, but trust me...in 25 years, when you rediscover them, you'll be very happy.
