i currently own a lakland skyline with a music man and jazz pickup. i have always loved music man basses, but have never owned one (though i own axis and luke guitars). i bought the lakland a few years ago as i wanted to get a variety of sounds, but the bartolini pickups just aren't getting the music man grind i'm desiring. so i'm about to sell the lakland and buy music man.

so today i walk into long & mcquade in toronto and try a bongo, a sterling sub and a regular sterling. let me tell you, i had a SPIRITUAL experience trying these basses! :D

first was the bongo (dual humbucker 4 string) - this is my first time trying a bongo. REALLY nice concept - the controls took a little while to get used to, but i really like the stacked knobs and the feel. there were some really nice tones out of it, but i felt like that patented music man bridge pickup only growl wasn't there. i tried all kinds of setting, but all the pickup and tone settings i tried were great! really nice bass and it's cool to see ebmm take things into the future with this one.

next was the sub sterling 4-string - i really dug this one when i plugged in. i liked the feel of the back of the neck and the size and weight were just perfect. some really nice tones out of this one.

and finally was the regular sterling - wow. i have played sterling before but i really fell in love. the tone was even better than the sub and everything was just perfect on it - i felt like this is the perfect bass for me. i can't wait to sell the lakland and get a sterling! sorry for this rant, but i'm really excited! :)

btw, at the store i plugged into a gallien-kruger head and 4x10 cab, a fender rumble, fender b-dec and a line6 studio 110. i always wanted to get different tones at low volumes at home (particularly an ampeg svt sound) and let me tell you, the studio 110 kicks!!! it's got this great tone for all the different sound settings! i read some pretty bad reviews on harmony-central, but boy am i glad i tried it in person cause i'm gonna buy one this weekend. now i just gotta sell my current set up and get the studio 110 and my sterling! woo-hoo! :D

Glad you found what you were looking for (as an aside the EB growel is more noticable in the single H (which also has a 3 band unless you get a HP). Sterlings kick major booty, can't wait to see what you pick up.

they had stingrays, but they're way to big from me. stingrays are HUGE basses and i've got smaller hands and find the sterling 'just right'. :D

Funny for me, I still have yet to play a Sterling, and how smaller basses feel, like jazzes.

Another convert in the making :D :D I assume the Sterling you played was an single H since you did not elaborate on PU configuration. If so, that is my favorite, I love the paralell setting that comes with the single H :). Good luck on finding the right one for you.

yes, it was a single H. really funky orange translucent colour (UGLY) with a rosewood board and the compensated nut. the parallel setting is the first position, right?
