Hi. I don't know if any of you guys have faced a faulty cobalt string, but I did. I re-stringed my guitar with a set of cobalts, and as I was only starting to tune it up, the D-string snapped.
It wasn't even close to D yet, but snapped anyway at about 18th fret, and I had to pick help from regular set. And just to make it clear; I've changed strings for more than twenty-five years so I'm not a beginner with this.
I know **** happens and the money I lost isn't gonna drive me nuts, but still.. Pretty expensive set and to be honest I'm pretty disappointed since this was my first set of cobalts.
But the question is: Is there anyone else with same problem?

I've heard of a couple of string failures since they came out. I believe it was the inner wire that broke. I don't know what a normal failure rate would be or what kind of rate the cobalts have so I have nothing to compare it to.

We've had no reports of similar issues on this forum and I've not seen similar reports on other forums either. As Vinkkari said, **** happens, it's a very rare thing and very unlucky. Treat it like any product where you have a fault on installation - talk to your store or call EB customer service.

I think I saw it on TB but it was quite a while ago.

With no other responses I would say they're a success. They sure work for me.

I hope I'm not giving you the wrong impression, BP. I know to listen to the voice of experience which from this seat in my room is you. You're the one making the product and at the center of the business. If anybody knows what's going on it would be you. I switched to EB products exclusively a year and a half ago and don't see any reason to change.

On my first set, the D-string snapped on me too. I just chalked it up to a freak deal. I think I'm on the 5th or 6th set since they came out, and I really dig the way they feel.

This happened to me, as well. Set of 10s. D string broke at the tuning peg when installing the set. I emailed customer service and didn't get a response. I kept the 3 plain strings for backup but threw the remaining 2 wound strings in the garbage. Would have liked to try them out. Shame.

That is very weird that your D strings seem to be at the topic of interest. Especially if its breaking at the tuning peg or 18th fret. Most strings break at the ball end new or used. Things that make you go hmm.

Pete DuBaldo was generous enough to give me a set of Cobalts when I got my PDN Luke3 a couple weeks ago. I have them on my JP6 now and they are definitely not the same old, same old. First, all six strings are intact - yay! The wound strings have a different texture. Hard to describe but slightly rougher than nickel, not nearly as rough as stainless strings. They are more flexible than nickel wound and have more clarity. They are easier to bend, almost enough that I would say I notice a change in tension across the set. You could perhaps use a 9 set for the plain and a 10 set for the wound and get an even tension feel across the set. Just a guess. Still evaluating, and have my first gig with them this Friday. Am curious to see how they hold up.
