Question Tru Oil question...

I did search the forums a little, and actually found an old post where Jack mentioned having left a coat of Tru Oil on a neck for 24 hours, before buffing it out. I recently did something similar, only I left 3 coats on, and after 24 hours I buffed it with very fine scotch brite pads, and have had it curing/drying for about 3 days now. Next step is to polish it with some wax. Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with having the original finish, it's my personal preference to have a little more sheen/shine.

I'm curious....does anyone else leave Tru-oil on longer than the standard EBMM recommendation for neck maintenance.

The results

I ended up doing 2 coats on the fretboard, and 3 coats on the back. I'm going to wait another day before waxing and putting it back on the body. I'll also let it sit until Sunday before even playing it...but after a quick feel...it's still very smooth.

Here are a couple of pictures. Unfortunately, the picture of the back looks a little darker because "natural light" disappeared when it got dark out.

In my wood working I've only used tru-oil for gun stocks. Never left it on for a period of time. Only wanted a satin finish that was protective for the outdoor elements. Will be interested in following your results.

I only use the tru oil wax . I like the feel better...

I put it back together this evening, and in my opinion it came out great! The finish, while having some shine, is still extremely smooth/slick feeling. The reason why I assembled it early is because the smell was gone, it dried for 3 days...and there really weren't very many coats.

Thanks guys. Just be patient if you do it....very thin coats...spread it out to cover, and then lightly rub it in. Wait a couple of hours between coats.

I treated mine according to the musicman instructions from the website. Apply oil, sit for 5 minutes, wipe off with paper towel, re-apply if desired. Apply wax and polish, repeat if desired. The oil seemed kind of sticky when I wiped it off but after I put the wax on the neck was super slick.
