Hello,

This is my first post to the forum, so hello everyone!

Now, for my problem. I haven't found discussion on my exact issue yet, so here goes...

I've got an approximately 7-year-old SR5. The truss rod does not move when I turn the wheel. I noticed that spinning the wheel counter-clockwise produced no change (the neck needs relief), so I took the neck off the bass and marked what I think is the end of the truss rod through the center of the truss rod wheel. The the mark did not move despite the wheel spinning around, so I have to conclude that it is stuck. Clockwise (tightening) is met with much resistance and losening only makes the truss rod wheel eventually come off the rod. Is there any way to fix this? I've tried a bit of WD40 into the hole, but no luck.

Thanks!

I figured as much...I'll definitely be on the phone with them tomorrow. I just feel so stupid, because it has probably been like this for years. The neck just never really required adjustment until now.

Thanks!

I understand. You will be in good hands tomorrow. Welcome to the forum and have some fun here.

Sterling Ball himself is here and the whole Ball family. You have found the right place to ask for sure.

Hey U!

I kid you not, I was wondering two days ago if you had gotten that 6-string yet. Thanks for the welcome!

Here I am on another bass forum, gassin' for an SR5 HH.

On topic, I don't think the threaded rod is supposed to move, but I still can't get any relief when I loosen the wheel. At least it is playable. I'll let you all know what happens with customer support.

Thanks again!

Well, I'm not totally sure I understand you correctly, but...
The truss rod should not move under any corcumstances! It is ancored at the head stock end, then goes in a channel all the way down to the heel, the cannel being curved so that the rod is closer to the back of the neck in the middle and closer to the fret board at the ends. When you tighten the nut, the rod straightens, thus forcing the neck to bend back.
Now, looseing the nut all the way should solve your problem, and if it doesnt you can clamp the neck to introduce some relief, though a proper repair man will probably be better than doing it yourself.
But then again, customer service have prolly sorted this already:D

Hi Strummer,

Thanks for that info. My research on truss rods after I posted last night showed me that the rod isn't a moving mechanism, rather a tightening or loosening mechanism as you've described. The problem is that turning the wheel does neither at this point.

Customer Service provided an RMA number, so the bass will be shipped out sometime next week. Hopefully, something can be done besides buying a new neck.

We actually did a little bending to introduce some relief and it feels pretty good. However, I do live in Michigan, where tempuratures range from about -10 to 110 degrees, so that can change.

Thanks to all!

Hi, I have a similar problem with my 4-string Sterling. How did you solve it? Did you have to replace the neck or was it possible to repair it?
