Hi... I have put a Musicman JP model on hold until I can get back to the store on Monday. The saddles were so outrageously high I asked them to have the guitar tech set them properly and that I'd come back and try it after it had time to settle. I should have noted the SN but didn't. I checked the Ernie Ball site but just can't seem to find it. Looks similar to the Onyx model but unless I'm color blind I'm positive it was dark blue, perhaps the Blue Pearl. Therefore, being at a loss I thought I'd post here to see if anyone can help with identifying the model. It's a very dark blue in color, not a flame of quilted top, a solid color and the neck and headstock match the body color. It has an ebony fretboard. There is a JP inlay in the first fret, no BFR inlay but BFR or Ball Family Reserve is inscribed in the plate securing the neck to the body. It has what looks like the recent generation pickups. Any thoughts? All replies welcome as well as any reviews from those who may have this model. Much Thanks!

Hi. No, sorry no photo. This morning I am positive it was dark blue and not onyx. Still, not a plain maple neck or rosewood. Definitely all painted blue with ebony.

Any chance you can get the SN that would end the mystery quickly as you can post it in the serial number sticky and EBMM will get back to you pretty quickly.

Sounds like maybe a special order for an endorsee but hard to say.:)

Thanks guys. I'll do that. I found it at a local independent music store who have it for sale as a used trade in. Looks brand new and other than the saddles almost turned out of their set screws it seems perfect.

You can narrow it down a bit by recalling some features...

Forearm scoop?
Symmetrical body horns?
Flame/quilt
BFR badge?

EB has offered many colors over the years and the website only shows current offerings.

It did have the forearm scoop, not sure about the horns, body was solid color not trans with a quilt or flame, BFR or Ball Family Reserve was on plate attaching body / neck.

They were toggle switches. I remember that much lol. And I am starting to think Onyx too. It looks black on the website, but it is the closest in looks and features and has the ebony board. Toggles, black knobs, stainless trem, pickups look the same.

First that comes to mind is JPXI. It is a very very dark blue but appears black from a distance most of the time, especially in indoor lighting. Other features mentioned seem to match as well.

Hi. Well as it turns out it is a JP XI Onyx. Thank you to everyone who helped along the way. I also posted the SN in the other post looking for info on it. It amazing and offered at 75% of new. The one concern u have is because the saddles were so high and on top of that it was tuned sharp it actually stressed the neck to the point where the polyester finish over the ends of the first 4 or 5 frets looks like it will very shortly chip off on the low E side of the fretboard. I'm a little opposed to what may be a bit unsightly but more concerned with what may no longer be a glistening smooth area on the neck. On hold for a couple more days while I think about it.... May pass. Which sucks after waiting for the neck to settle and thinking it was a great deal...

Is it new or used? It could be covered under the factory warranty? You should ask the MM customer service if it'd be covered before you give up on it. Worth a shot.

Hi. It is used. But looks like it was gently used other than the fact that someone wlike do that to such an expensive guitar. New in Canada is $2400 + tax. Used price is $1800. I guess I could call customer service.

Funny... When I receved my PDN BFR a couple of weeks ago, it came pre-setup from the dealer I bought it from.... And they had set it with the saddles all the way up. Literally, full extension on each saddle. It looked ridiculous, and the action/setup were way off. Credit- it was perfectly in tune when it came out of the case (which is cool, but I don't put as much stock in that as others do-- guitars go out of tune, it just happens).

After putting saddles down to a more normal setting, and then tweaking from there, it is back to where I know and love my MM action to be. I wonder if the original owner of the Onyx bought it from the same place and the same person set it up... who knows, but why put the saddles all the up?

I just like this guitar too much to pass on it. The issue with the frets is not as bad as I first thought. The guitar tech looked at it and I had a much more accomplished player (friend) have a look. They are going to do a set up and being a .09 player asked for 9 - 42s. Less neck stress and what I prefer. They will do that and I'll try again before I buy. Needs a setup anyway for them to sell it.

Cool.. Good luck with it. I have a JPXI it's my favorite guitar. I've done hundreds of gigs with it. It plays and sounds great and is Ultra reliable. Thinking about ordering another as a back-up. I use my JP6 as my back-up now. I have a Majesty on order since August still waiting, we'll see how it compares.

That seems to be the consensus. My friends are trying to convince me that 2000 would buy a lot of quality used guitars and I should be looking at them - the usual cast of great USA brands. But for my money and being a smaller guy who enjoys mostly playing while on my couch it offers the most flexibility, light weight and compact design with features worth paying for.

Just a general question. String with 9 or 10 gauge? I play through a Soldano hot rod 25 watt and a marshall 1936 212 with G12t75s. Thinking if switching to a cab with V30s. Any advice? I understand this guitar can really rock among other styles.
