I'd like to tune my Sterling or StingRay down a full step. Can I use the standard Slinkys that come with the bass or should I go to another gauge?

Thanks,

Go with what feels best to you. If you tune down, and the strings feel too "floppy" to you, that's a good sign you need heavier strings.

my cover band just started tuning down a half step to help the singer out a little.

i find that at least for a half step, the stock strings work fine. i would experiment with a little bigger gauge though for a whole step maybe.

I have a bass that I set up for DGCF tuning, myself. In order to maintain the tension, I increase the gauge.

Try the Slinkies that come in the purple wrapper (110-90-75-55). Then just set up and intonate the bass as normal. I've found that this works well; in fact, I'm using this particular setup on one of my current band's songs!

Will that gauge require me to file the nut?

Thanks (to all)

just get the hybrid slinkys. i can get all the way down to c# if i dont play too hard. a whole step down feels pretty much normal. chick singers love weird keys, and i like to play open as possible, so i spend a good amount of time in the studio drop tuned with no tuning / intonation problems at all on the hybrids.

I'm thinking about trying a "Hybrid configuration" myself.
On the one Stingray i have, its spend all its life strung with the Regulars (105-50).
Ive always loved the D,G being heavy with a relatively "light in comparison" top end.
I did not long ago swap out the whole thing for a set lighter (super slinkys 100-45) an quickly changed them back cause even after all the necessary tweaks that needed to be made the Stingray that they were on just didn't feel right ?, so swapped it back an phew ..... (it felt whole again)

(few weeks later an it is waring a set of group III flats ???? (confused ??? yeah me to :) )

But the other Stingray wares a set of Supers and it fits like a glove, i just miss the set up and feel of the Regulars of the other so I'm thinking of mixing them up ??
105-85 low end to a 65-45 top end ????

(I am having a "non-moving-forward-getting-frustrated-with-my-playing plateau status so.......with my playing at the present so questioning everything about everything so the above are just my present thoughts and doings :p)

Haven't tried the hybrid set as of yet, but will be doing soon soon (its a great idea thats been an off the peg gage for ??? how long ..... so going to mix and match some strings up an see how it goes....

precisely what im using brother danny. the mixing and matching has been done for us, and is perfect in my estimation.
