I've been playing most of my life and lately there is something that has been driving me INSANE....

it's the "out of tuneness" of major 3 intervals esapecially when the third is voiced as the chords top voice. Of course, it seems that distortion "amplifies" this effect.
This has forced me to play fourths (AD vs ADF# for example for a D major triad voicing) but it's not always appropriate (a little too Blackmore-esque at times :D )
I've been seriously contemplating compensation (like Earvana or Buzz Feiten) buy I'm not entirley sure it will help.
Any suggestions? (besides "take up keyboards" or "give up guitar" )
Do any of you have the same issues?
Does anyone here use compensation with any degree of success?

Thanks

I hear ya, Jim :D

For a period a couple years back, the intrinsic "out of tune-ness" of a guitar was driving me insane... Eventually, I learned to go back to where I was before and let it go so it doesn't grind on my nervers any more - and I've heard the same story from a number of other players now... Anyway, I've been using the GTR tempered tuning on my Peterson VS1 and it definitely helps tame the groink, but I've never tried the Earvana (though I'll admit I've been tempted) or the (far more radical, imho) Feiten solutions... If you do go for the Earvana, I'd really like to hear what you think of it...

Hi, I'm Jazzbo and I'm a tunaholic..
Thanks Jimi-I'm glad I'm not alone.
Do you know offhand what the Peteerson "recipe" is? I assume it's offsets designed to average out the equal temperment discrepancies. (BTW, I'm TRYING to let it go  but yikes it's still makin' me nuts  )
I'm trying to hold off on the Earvana in the hopes of getting a EBMM compensated nut first.
I'll keep you posted

I know some players who are more sensitive to this problem than others - I don't really get annoyed by it - I've probably started playing around this problem without even noticing. My scalloped neck strat would be the worst offender- it's so easy to push a note sharp. I think the BF system is really good but I just do not want to put any of my guitars on the work bench if I can avoid it. It could well be put up with it or move to drums... :)

Just curious as to what guitar in particular you are having this problem with. I think different solutions work with different types of guitars, that's why I ask. Although, I think with your complaint, the most effective solution is to probably go Buzz Feiten and get a Peterson Strobo to tune the thing.

Sorry, Jim, I have no idea, but I bet you could ask on the Peterson forum - there's one on their website...

Hey Jazzbo, I have Earvana Nuts on all non Floyd Rosed guitars of mine and besides of the look so ugly, it´s worth it!!! The F is an F at the first fret and nothing else and the chords come out much cleaner.
The bridge saddles straighten up to a nearly perfect line on my Tele.

The musicman compensated nut is something I wait for too, because it looks much more like a regular nut.

Hope this helps.
