I own a Silhouette Special which I love!! But for the past few months I,ve had some issues with tunning on the G string whenever I use the trem. I've tried everything I can think of from putting on a new nut, using graphite and nut sauce to lube the nut, swapping machine heads even swapping the trem with one of my other MM guitars! The strange thing is none of the other strings go out of tune and when I use the trem the string goes flat and If I do a string bend after that it will go sharp! I'm all out of ideas would be great to hear from anyone who can suggest something I haven't thought of!!

Musicman are the best!!!:)

Cheers

So you have more than one ball?
Swap the G string from one guitar to another and see if the problem switches from one guitar to another.

Is the string "seating" nicely in the trem blocks?

The G string issue is a known prob on ALL trem guitars.

I've been told by one of the world's top repairmen that it's the string that moves the most when a trem is used and is impossible to cure.

I've just accepted it and adapted my trem use to the point the issue doesn't arise :D

Hi Spud I think you bought my old evh in Perth? Anyhoo yeah swapped and changed many a string on these and the string looks steady in the saddle. My other guitar is a Luke which I'm selling on the forum.

Hi Tony I did and yes they were very helpful they sent me a replacement comp nut. But in order for them to fix the tuning problem I would have to send the guitar off and it's my main axe and I gig three nights a week. Another question how far in should I have to screw in the springs for the trem to get the best tuning stability?

Dude, don't get too wrapped up in it... it cannot be cured, just lesened.

I just had my own SS Plekked, which also does the nut and it's now as good as it can be.

The guys told me to raise the trem so it's floating and parallel to the body, then lower the saddles to get the action correct and lesson the break angle for the string. This gives the best stability if you are a trem user.

My set up guru is Charlie Chandler in London and you don't get better than him. ANYWHERE.

Yes that's right - I played it live last Thursday and the tone through my Mesa was AWESOME!!

I'd like to get as much history as possible on that guitar - can you tell me anything about it? - maybe PM me ? - I'd appreciate it. Thanks

Steve, ya might check your G tuner, which I assume is a locking Schaller, unless your SS is pretty old. I had one, that unless I really squashed it tight, would slip out of tune, usually when I bent the string. Happens only on unwound strings. I replaced the tuner, no more tuning slippage.

Or, just take a turn around the post before tightening your string.

I wouldn't mess with that. That just puts more or less tension on the bridge against the body. If you want more resistance on your trem, just add more springs.
